摘要:
ABSTRACT:The individual and interpersonal dynamics of 21 suicidal persons (15 females and 6 males) and their partners were investigated. Each couple was interviewed at the time of the suicidal person's psychiatric hospitalization following a recent episode of suicidal behavior or serious suicidal ideation. Each partner was administered two tests of individual functioning and one test of interpersonal functioning. The results revealed that the dynamics of these couples were characterized by complementarity at the level of overt individual functioning, and similarity at the level of covert individual functioning. Both partners in a couple tended to describe the suicidal partner as psychologically disabled and the nonsuicidal partner as well‐functioning. However, the suicidal patients and their partners were similar in terms of covert individual functioning both showing a tendency toward anaclitic, dependent object relations. The communication between the partners was found to be disturbed in a large majority of the couples. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of an integrative model of individual and interpersonal dynamic

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This Shneidman Lecture addresses the question: Are young adults' suicides psychologically different from those of other adults? Eight clusters (or patterns) as possible predictors of suicide notes and, by implication, suicide are discussed to address this question. The eight clusters are as follows: unbearable psychological pain, interpersonal relations, rejection‐aggression, inability to adjust, indirect expressions, identification‐egression, ego, and cognitive constriction. Comparisons between young adults (aged 18–25) and other adults indicate that young adults' suicides do differ psychologically in a number of patterns, but that considerable commonalities exist across the adult life span. The presentation emphasizes that a life span developmental perspective is essential when one is attempting to understand the suicides of young adults. A number of genuine suicide notes of young adults are presented to illustrate, from an idiographic view, what it might have been like for these individuals in the last moments of their

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Canadian and West German successful suicides for the years 1974–1977 were used to fit a log‐linear model relating age, method of suicide, gender, and country to suicide frequency. Configural frequency analyses (CFA) were performed to complement the log‐linear analyses, as well as to obtain more information about the data. A log‐linear model involving all four three‐way interactions among these variables was required to explain the observed frequency distribution in a satisfactory manner. Results from this study support McIntosh and Santos's (1982) findings that each gender displays its own unique pattern of methods of suicide. This study also showed that each age group has its own unique pattern of methods of suicide within each specific gender group. Results from CFA showed different patterns in the trends of suicide for each age × gender × country × method of suicide grouping. These results can be used to help clarify the intricate relationships among the factors that are important in explaining su

摘要:
ABSTRACT:National data on firearm suicides and accidental firearm deaths for persons aged 15–19 from 1955 to 1979 were examined to test hypotheses of increases in reported suicide rates as resulting from (1) improved accuracy in the determination and certification of suicide in equivocal firearm deaths; (2) actual increases in the rate of firearm suicides among teens; or (3) some combination of these factors. Data presented support the hypothesis of certification changes as the primary factor influencing suicide rates during the first 12‐year segment, but suggest a period of actual growth combined with continued certification change from 1967 to 1

摘要:
ABSTRACT:I was given an opportunity to learn how suicide prevention programs are administered in the United States. Not surprisingly, treatment for suicidal patients is conducted in terms of the basic tenets of Western culture. When American therapists are seeing Asian patients, especially suicidal individuals who are regressed and show cultural characteristics, the therapists should be aware of the importance of cultural differences. This report discusses recommendations for treating suicidal Asian patients.
