摘要:
The theory presented below provides a rationale for downward wage rigidity and consequent cyclical unemployment by modifying the neoclassical assumption of behavioral independence. Such a modification permits an examination of important nonmarket relationships holding between the individual's wage and the wages paid to other people and between perceived equity in wages received and worker productivity—both linkages widely recognized by personnel managers but little explored by economists. The resulting model predicts a pattern of behavior that is consistent with the available evidence on the actual operation of labor market

摘要:
Through a specific model, this paper explores a promising general framework for unified modelling of the size distribution of income and wealth. The specific model includes physical and human capital accumulation, factoral and size distribution effects, redistributive taxation, economic growth, and other distribution‐related mechanisms. The main conclusion is that the general framework can accommodate a wide range of distributional phenomena and still remain analytically tractable. Specifically, the framework allows closed form analytic solution for the first two moments (mean vector and variance‐covariance matrix) of the joint distribution over individuals of income, wealth, and other variab

摘要:
Federal milk market regulation sets the wholesale price of most fluid milk in this country. This paper explores the purposes served by price‐setting procedures under regulation and their quantitative impact. The institutional and theoretical background is provided, and an econometric model of a regulated milk market is estimated. The latter demonstrates that actual prices are consistent with those which would maximize producer benefit in 1960 and 1970, and that regulation produces quite substantial effects on prices and quantities within markets, on price patterns among markets, and on income distribution and economic efficienc

摘要:
This paper provides an empirical evaluation of collective bargaining's impacts on salary, compensation (salary plus fringe benefits) and promotion for faculty at unionized four‐year colleges and universities during the 1970's. The results suggest that there have been no general economic gains associated with the adoption of collective bargaining by college and university facult

摘要:
Black fertility declined sharply following Reconstruction. Demographers argue that explanations of post‐bellum white fertility behavior are inapplicable to blacks. This paper hypothesizes that the reduced fertility was due to economic factors. An economic model of fertility is developed and estimated econometrically; it is consistent with the fertility experience of both races. It is concluded that several products of emancipation, including urbanization, increased literacy levels, and a shift in the economic burden of child maintenance from the slave owner to the family, were instrumental in increasing the opportunity cost of black children to their parent

摘要:
This paper attempts to determine if a significant differential existed in the quality of the academic placements of male and female economists for the period 1960 to 1974, and examines the factors at work in such placements. Several reduced form equations of a formal three equation model of the hiring process in the academic labor market are estimated by ordinary least squares regression analysis. The analysis indicates that males had a 22.2 percent advantage in placement quality over women for the period and most of this can be attributed to some form of discrimination.

摘要:
Browning (1975) has recently reasoned that the social insurance budget is inevitably too large in a democracy. The purpose of this paper is to argue that there are different conceptual contexts within which the correct size of the social insurance budget can be analyzed. Within at least one relevant context it is not at all obvious that the social insurance budget must inevitably be too large in a democracy, The first part of this paper reviews Browning's argument. The second presents an alternative analysis which leads to the conclusion that the social insurance system may well have certain characteristics that work toward the maintenance of an efficient budget level.
