AbstractA model of a deteriorating system with imperfect information is considered. The structures appropriate for such a model include failing machinery and depleted inventory systems. In an effort to add a new dimension to such models, it is assumed that the operator must pay an inspection cost to determine the precise state of the system. At the start of every time period, the operator is faced with three choices: repair, no action, or inspection. Under fairly general assumptions, the optimal policy for repair is found to be straightforward and intuitive. This result has two important areas of application.

AbstractThe segregated storage problem involves the optimal distribution of products among compartments with the restriction that only one product may be stored in each compartment. The storage capacity of each compartment, the storage demand for each product, and the linear cost of storing one unit of a product in a given compartment are specified. AbstractThis paper investigates the problem of determining the optimal location of plants, and their respective production and distribution levels, in order to meet demand at a finite number of centers. The possible locations of plants are restricted to a finite set of sites, and the demands are allowed to be random. The cost structure of operating a plant is dependent on its location and is assumed to be a piecewise linear function of the production level, though not necessarily concave or convex. The paper is organized in three parts. In the first part, a branch and bound procedure for the general piecewise linear cost problem is presented, assuming that the demand is known. In the second part, a solution procedure is presented for the case when the demand is random, assuming a linear cost of production. Finally, in the third part, a solution procedure is presented for the general problem utilizing the results of the earlier parts. Certain extensions, such as capacity expansion or reduction at existing plants, and geopolitical configuration constraints can be easily incorporated within this framework.

AbstractA serial production line is defined wherein a unit is produced if, and only if, all machines are functioning. A single buffer stock with finite capacity is to be placed immediately after one of the first N‐1 machines in theNmachine line. When all machines have equal probability of failure it is shown that the optimal buffer position is exactly in the middle of the line. This result is synthesized with the earlier work of Koenigsberg and Buzacott including an analysis of the covariance between transition states. AbstractTo rank the solutions to the assignment problem using an extreme point method, it is necessary to be able to find all extreme points which are adjacent to a given extreme solution. Recent work has shown a procedure for determining adjacent vertices on transportation polytopes using a modification of the Chernikova Algorithm. We present here a procedure for assignment polytopes which is a simplification of the more general procedure for transportation polytopes and which also allows for implicit enumeration of adjacent vertices.

AbstractIn this paper a two‐person Markov game, in discrete time, and with perfect state information, is considered from the point of view of a single player (player A) only. It is assumed that A's opponent (player B) uses the same strategy every time the game is played. It is shown that A can obtain a consistent estimate of B's strategy on the basis of his past experience of playing the game with B. Two methods of deriving such an estimate are given. Further, it is shown that using one of these estimates A can construct a strategy for himself which is asymptotically optimal. AbstractThe ordered matrix flow shop problem with no passing of jobs is considered. In an earlier paper, the authors have considered a special case of the problem and have proposed a simple and efficient algorithm that finds a sequence with minimum makespan for a special problem. This paper considers a more general case. This technique is shown to be considerably more efficient than are existing methods for the conventional flow shop problems.

AbstractMany techniques of forecasting are based upon extrapolation from time series. While such techniques have useful applications, they entail strong assumptions which are not explicitly enunciated. Furthermore, the time series approach not based on an indigenous forecast principle. The first attack from the present point of view was initiated by S. S. Wilks.Of particular interest over a wide range of operational situations in reliability, for example, is the behavior of the extremes of the Weibull and Gumbel distributions. Here we formulate forecasters for the minima of various forms of these distributions. The forecasters are determined for minimization in mean square of the distance. Fromnoriginal observations the forecaster provides the minimum of the nextmobservations when the original distribution is maintained.For each of the forecasters developed, tables of efficiency have been calculated and included in the appendix. An explicit example has been included for one of the forecasters. Its performance has been demonstrated by the use of Monte Carlo technique. The results indicate that the forecaster can be used in practice with satisfactory results.
