摘要:
AbstractExamination of the polytene chromosomes of the fourth instar larvae provides evidence for the existence of two sibling species within the taxonAnopheles (Anopheles) coustaniLaveran. Crosses between the two chromosomal types produces sterile male offspring. Since no classical morphological differences can be demonstrated in the adults, the probable existence of such characters in the larvae and pupae is discussed.

摘要:
AbstractMethods used to assess ecological diversity have been adapted to show that binary and multistate taxonomic characters may be assigned measures of diversity that correspond closely with their information content. A distinction is drawn between the two major components of character diversity, corresponding respectively to the number of states exhibited and the evenness with which these are distributed over taxa. By choosing characters with high heterogeneity (i.e. high values of those indices which combine the two components of diversity) it is possible to select relatively small subsets of characters which effectively reproduce the main features of reference ordinations of the taxa which were based on all available characters. Such diversity indices and the appropriate measures of information content can be regarded as a system of weights which vary ten‐fold or more among themselves and which can be applied to all the characters to produce numerically weighted ordinations. Despite the considerable differential weighting introduced in this way, the resulting ordiantions differ very little from ‘unweighted’ reference ordinations in which all characters have been accorded equal weights. The results suggest that numerical weighting of this kind does little to improve the quality of phenetic procedures when applied to reasonably large bodies of real taxonomic

摘要:
AbstractThe phylogeny of the Labeninae was investigated using modern cladistic techniques. The cladogram obtained was then examined and related to the current classification, known biology and geographical distribution of the group. Four tribes were recognized, Labenini, Groteini, Poecilocryptini and Brachycyrtini; the Clasini were transferred to the subfamily Phygadeuontinae. A hypothetical biological evolution was postulated commencing with ancestral parasites of wood‐borers and involving two lines of specialization, the groteines associated with bees and the brachycyrtines associated with cocoons. On the basis of the cladogram and the present distribution, a southern origin was postulated for the grou

摘要:
AbstractThe termite family Termitidae comprises four subfamilies: Apicotermitinae, Macrotermitinae, Termitinae and Nasutitermitinae. Keys are given here to the genera of the Termitinae and Nasutitermitinae found in the New World. The keys rely on morphological features of the soldier caste; for this reason no key is provided to the soldierless apicotermitine genera found in the New World. The Macrotermitinae are absent from the region.

摘要:
AbstractThe identities of the Microlepidoptera described by Linnaeus and Clerck have been critically reviewed. Evidence used to reassess usage of Linnaeus and Clerck names comes in part from the surviving material of these two authors, from their publications and those of subsequent revisers, and from contemporary collections. Results are presented in the form of an alphabetic catalogue of the species‐group names used by Linnaeus and Clerck for Microlepidoptera, with a complete listing of material in the Linnaeus and Clerck collections. Lectotypes are designated for most of the species and new synonymies are propose
