SUMMARYA comparative study was undertaken to evaluate the performance of algal cultures grown in plastic‐covered outdoor minipond systems. It was demonstrated that production in enclosed miniponds was higher than in open ones on account of the stimulatory effects of elevated temperatures which developed in the enclosed systems. Although the plastic covering reduced the amount of light which was available for photosynthesis, this had minimal effects on production due to the light saturation characteristics of the algal cells.
