ABSTRACTIn 62 elderly subjects (age range, 66 to 100 years), fasting serum cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were determined after three days of a high carbohydrate diet. Mean cholesterol levels were within accepted normal limits for the lower age groups and did not differ significantly between the age groups studied. Mean triglyceride levels were highest in the 70–79 age group and significantly lower in older subjects. Serum triglyceride values greater than 200 mg/100 ml were always associated with carbohydrate intolerance, and there was a highly significant correlation between fasting triglyceride concentration and fasting glucose concentration in the subjects with the more severe degrees of carbohydrate intolerance. ABSTRACTThe inaugural meeting of the Western Division of the American Geriatrics Society was held on October 10, 1972 in the Los Angeles Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, California. These introductory remarks outline the purposes of the American Geriatrics Society, as part of the plan for better health care that should not wait for government implementation. These efforts are particularly pertinent for the southwestern United States where so many elderly people have moved. Mental and physical health and continued productivity are the goals.

ABSTRACTThe present and future needs of geriatric medicine are outlined, including a greatly increased need for personnel in various categories. Reasons for the present inadequacy may be traced to the negative attitudes of medical and nursing school faculties, and the lack of communication between various groups who care for the elderly. The Council on Long‐Term Care of Geriatric Patients of the American Geriatrics Society plans to attack these problems in several ways, e.g., better guidelines, interdisciplinary symposia and training programs. Also, emphasis is placed upon present methods for preventing premature disability in association with the aging process, and the need for basic research to reach a much deeper understanding of aging. ABSTRACTIn 100 patients (mean age, 51) with angina pectoris due to coronary heart disease (documented), determinations were made of the serum cholesterol, triglyceride and uric acid levels on two separate days at least two weeks apart; also (in the absence of fasting hyperglycemia) glucose tolerance tests were performed after oral administration of 100 gm of glucose. In 95 per cent of the 100 patients, the serum cholesterol level was above 200 mg/100 ml. In 51 per cent there was hypertriglyceridemia. In no patient was there hypertriglyceridemia in association with a serum cholesterol level below 200 mg/100 ml. Thirty‐five per cent of the 100 patients showed abnormal glucose tolerance. ABSTRACTSixty‐six geriatric patients with various “complaints of the aged” attributable to cerebral arteriosclerosis with cerebrovascular insufficiency received standard dosages of Hydergine (an ergot alkaloid preparation) or papaverine for twelve weeks in a double‐blind study. No adverse reactions occurred in patients taking either drug. Ratings of symptom severity, overall clinical condition, global therapeutic change, and mental status evaluations showed that the Hydergine group consistently improved more than the papaverine group. Hydergine was significantly superior to papaverine in relieving impaired mental alertness, confusion, irritability, hostility, emotional lability, depressive mood, and lack of motivation. Time‐response analyses indicated that the therapeutic effects of Hydergine were steadily progressive during the trial, whereas the effects of papaverine tended to become manifest only late in the 12‐week trial, if at all. ABSTRACTAn analysis was made of the records of 1,840 patients in whom diabetes started after the age of 35 and before the age of 70, and who were under the authors' care for from one to fifteen years. According to the predictions of life‐insurance tables, these patients lived longer than non‐diabetic patients. There was a significant decrease in longevity in those who had persistent hyperglycemia. The greatest increase in longevity occurred in those whose disease could be controlled by diet alone or with sulfonylurea drugs. There was less apparent benefit from phenformin or insulin in this respect. In comparison, the findings of the University Group Diabetes Program are discussed in some detail. ABSTRACTAn investigation was made of the comparative effects of living in urban public housing or a suburban nursing home upon the personal and social adjustment of elderly women. Structured personal interviews were held with 20 residents in each setting. The Kutner Morale scale and a Socialness scale designed for this study were used. The findings indicated that there existed: 1) a statistically significant difference in the personal and social adjustments between the two populations, with the public‐housing elderly achieving higher mean scores; 2) a significant relationship between the personal and social adjustment of individuals within each residential setting; and 3) a strong positive relationship between health and social adjustment in the public‐housing population. It was tentatively concluded that the female elderly in public housing showed higher adjustment than did the female elderly in the nursing home. Factors which may have influenced these findings were the nursing home's comparative lack of privacy, independence of action and nearness to friends, relatives and the community. ABSTRACTUpon admission to the hospital, a 53‐year‐old black woman showed anorexia, weight loss, lethargy, incontinence and hypochromic anemia with increased storage of iron in the bone marrow. After an unsuccessful trial of pyridoxine, all symptoms and signs improved dramatically following administration of pantothenic acid. (At the time of admission, chest x‐ray findings were such that INH‐streptomycin therapy was started.) She was discharged 6.5 months after entry. For several years thereafter she received no vitamin therapy, and a similar clinical picture again developed. ABSTRACTA case of generalized leiomyosarcoma in a 60‐year‐old woman is presented. Apparently the lesion originated in the right lung prior to 1967, since the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts and the pelvic organs remain normal.
