ABSTRACTThe Chinese‐born author gives an illustrated account of his visit to China in 1972, twenty‐two years after he left that country in 1950. For the first time in her history China appears to be self‐sufficient in taking care of the medical needs of her people. Among the many medical developments are the revitalization of traditional medicine, the emergence of “barefoot” doctors, the synthesis of insulin, the successful rejoining of severed limbs and fingers, family planning, the management of extensive burns, the successful treatment of choriocarcinoma by chemotherapy, and acupunctural anesthesia. Of great significance is the apparent increase of coronary artery disease among the Chinese. Whether the increased incidence is relative due to more accurate diagnosis and longer life expectancy, or absolute due to better nutrition and perhaps over‐eating, is not yet certain. In contrast, the incidence of lung cancer has not shown an increase despite the prevalence of cigarette smoking among the Chinese. Cancer is one of the major killers; a constant campaign is waged for the early discovery of malignant tumors. ABSTRACTThe syndrome of lingual‐facial‐buccal movements (dyskinesia) in the elderly involves the dopaminergic neuronal system and particularly the dopamine receptor sites of the corpus striatum. ABSTRACTDaily hypobaric (low pressure) oxygen inhalation was given to 59 behaviorally disturbed geriatric patients at a nursing center. They were either disruptive in behavior or withdrawn, and all had a serious chronic or terminal illness, as evidenced by a mortality rate of 8 per cent during the two‐month study period. The scores for changes in psychogeriatric and behavioral manifestations showed that 28 of these oxygen‐treated patients (47.5 per cent) achieved ratings of “excellent” or “good,” i.e., they became more alert, less confused, less hostile, more cooperative, more sociable and much more interested in the world around them. ABSTRACTUpon admission to a nursing home, a 79‐year‐old woman with peripheral arteriosclerosis had a large (10 times 17.5 cm) raw painful ulcer of the left leg. She had had the ulcer for five years and, ten months before admission, had undergone an aorto‐femoral bypass with sympathectomy. ABSTRACTA 72‐year‐old woman was treated 1) for papillary cystadenocarcinoma of the ovary, by surgery and radiotherapy, 2) for carcinoma of the right breast, by surgery and radiotherapy, and 3) for terminal acute granulocytic leukemia by blood transfusions. All three of these malignancies occurred within a fourteen‐month period and the patient died about sixteen months after the diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma.
