ABSTRACT:Macular degeneration causes a profound loss of visual acuity due to inadequate blood circulation in the capillaries of the choroid plexus and pigment epithelium of the important pattern‐recognizing area of the retina. This disease is the cause of half the blindness in people over the age of 65 and of nearly one‐third of all blindness. In this study an important new technique was added to six tests already in use to assess retinal disease. Data on 10 patients were collected by the following methods: 1) optic disc photography; 2) fluorescein angiography; 3) visual acuity testing; 4) visual fields; 5) foveal sensitivity; 6) electroretinography with automatic analysis of the record by use of an electronic sampling filter and a specially built computer to measure the total electrochemical energy released by the retina; and 7) the evoked cortical response (as indicated in the electroencephalogram) to the stimulus of an alternating chess‐board pattern. ABSTRACT:Experiments were conducted on the storage of hyaline cartilage, and on the results of cartilage allografts implanted in dogs over a two‐year period. Rejection phenomena were minimal as long as joint function was resumed early and adverse mechanical factors were controlled. Parallel experiments on dogs confirmed the potential of hyaline cartilage for repair with a smooth fibrotic membrane. It proved impossible to preserve viable hyaline cartilage grafts for longer than a week. Articular surface transplantation was performed in a small group of patients. ABSTRACT:A study was made of the defecatory sensation in 130 patients with normal rectums. By means of a specially designed balloon inserted into the rectum, determinations were made of intrarectal pressure, rectal diameter and rectal tension. The desire to defecate was correlated with the levels of these measurements. There was a progressive rise with age in the threshold for these factors. Rectal sensitivity to distention was lower in the constipated patients than in those who were not constipated.

ABSTRACT:Anticoagulant (Dicumarol) therapy was given for five to six weeks to 15 hospital patients with organic brain damage secondary to alcoholism. The results were excellent in 5, good in 7 and poor in 3 cases; 8 of the patients could be discharged home.
