摘要:
ABSTRACT:Among the many factors that shade and color the intensity and direction of human sexuality are gonadal integrity, chromosomal determinants, external genital adequacy, socio‐economic influences, endogenous and exogenous hormonal dependency, and possibly hypothalamic sensitization during fetal life. Neither gonads nor chromosomal sex decide the direction of overt sexual behavior. Libido, in great measure, is a chemical test‐tube equation. Testosterone is the hormone that intensifies sexual drive in both man and woman; it is particularly useful in restoring sexual drive in the woman who once knew, but has lost her libido. Testosterone in the adult female does not alter the direction of sexual behavior or amatory responsiveness. Age need not alter performance nor eliminate the satisfaction and pleasure that attend sexual gratification. Several illustrative cases are presen

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Fasting blood glucose concentrations and the values obtained two hours after administration of 50 gm of glucose were examined in 1500 patients admitted to the department for chronic diseases in a hospital in Finland. In females of the higher age groups, fasting blood glucose was more frequently over 100 mg per 100 ml than it was in age groups under 60. In males, no such phenomenon was observed. Two hours after the administration of glucose all the older age groups showed high blood glucose values much more often than did the younger age groups. In males, no additional tendency to increase with age was observed in the age brackets beyond 60–64 years. In females, on the contrary, elevated values became continuously more common as age increased. Diagnostic information obtained by the glucose tolerance test appears to be questionable in the case of elderly patients. Doubt is also thrown on the justifiability of the prediabetes concept by the very high frequency of diabetic‐type glucose tolerance curves in the oldest age gro

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Nine aged subjects (67 to 87 years old) and 9 young and adult persons were submitted to an exercise load (cycloergometer) varying between 1.0 to 1.5 W/kg. Tests of cardiorespiratory function, blood coagulation and fibrinolysis were carried out before and after exercise, and then after 5, 15 and 60 minutes. The increase of respiratory rate was more marked in the elderly subjects than in the young and adult persons. No differences were observed with respect to the increase of heart rate and blood pressure. The increase of oxygen “pulse” was considerably less pronounced in the elderly. The pulmonary ventilation and the ventilatory oxygen equivalent were significantly different after six minutes of exercise. No significant differences were observed for blood lactic and pyruvic acid, or for the blood coagulation indexes, including factor VIII. The increase in fibrinolytic activity was marked and constant, irrespective of

摘要:
ABSTRACT:A report is presented to the American Geriatrics Society on the 24th Annual Conference on Aging, sponsored by the University of Michigan and Wayne State University, and held in Ann Arbor, Michigan, June 7–9, 1971. Plenary sessions, workshops, panel presentations and discussion groups filled half a week of endeavor concerning “The Care of Old People—Creating the Humane Environment.”A description of old people in need of care was combined with issues and achievements, nudging the economics of health goals along the way. The mobilization of organized groups of retired persons, with a political potential, was an outstanding

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Disturbed cardiac rhythm often leads to sudden incapacitation and an apparent accident under perilous circumstances. Rhythm disturbances occur more frequently among older people, who may lack many ordinary protections against accidents because of failing eyesight and hearing, an impaired sense of smell, forgetfulness, a slow reaction time, weakness, or painful and damaged joints. Such persons may be deprived by a momentary cardiac disturbance of the ability to respond quickly. Thus they may release control of a motor car so that it careens across a busy highway, or they may fall from a height or into moving machinery from a precarious footing. If the cardiac disturbance can be detected early enough, the potential accident victim can be withdrawn from peril; however, if the cardiac disturbance can be prevented, the old person may retain the personal ability to deal with hazards. Six illustrative cases, with electrocardiograms, are presented.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:An investigation was carried out to determine the cutaneous vascular response of 10 elderly men under conditions of reflex heating. It was found, in 38 of 40 observations, that heat (infra‐red irradiation) applied to the trunk resulted in a constriction of the skin vessels of the lower extremities in lieu of the expected vasodilatation. This paradoxical reaction is attributed to the possibly defective thermoregulatory mechanism in elderly arteriosclerotic patients. It is concluded that reflex heating, even when applied with necessary precautions, is an unreliable therapeutic method for the age

摘要:
ABSTRACT:The state of the oral cavity affects general health, and vice versa. Nevertheless, rarely, if ever, are the oral tissues considered in multiple testing programs. Predictive medicine programs differ, in that they include signs and symptoms referable to the oral cavity. Representative data indicate, for example, that alveolar bone loss proceeds at a much slower rate in persons with good oral hygiene and efficient carbohydrate metabolism.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Data on 3 elderly patients with neurological manifestations of vitamin‐B12deficiency, without anemia, are presented. In one case the appearance of peripheral neuropathy preceded the onset of speech disturbances and mental changes and the onset of the common syndrome of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. In the other 2 patients, lateral sclerosis in one case and pseudotabes in the other case were the presenting features. Several months after the beginning of cyanocobalamin therapy, the patients were almost cured.Early diagnosis of vitamin‐B12deficiency is important in cases of myelopathy, encephalopathy or peripheral neuropathy without hematological changes, because the neurological damage may become completely irreversible if treatment is delayed by failure in early diagno
