ABSTRACT:This study involved 6 dogs in which collagen tubes had been implanted in the left ventricle, while the right ventricle was left as a control. The dogs had led a normal life for twelve months after operation. Studies of myocardial metabolism, initiated a year after collagen‐tube revascularization, were performed as follows: Under anesthesia, samples of myocardium were taken from the left ventricle in which the left anterior descending coronary and circumflex coronary arteries had been ligated, and also from the right untreated ventricle. Oxygen uptake studies demonstrated that the myocardium of the treated ventricle respired at the same rate as that of the control ventricle, indicating that the revascularized tissue was efficiently perfused with blood and oxygen, that the cells of the revascularized myocardium were viable, and that the revascularization method would probably be adequate to maintain homeostasis in an ischemic heart.A review of the literature shows that previous methods of treatment leave much to be desired. This method is offered as another means of treating the ischemic heart early in the patient's history of complaints. ABSTRACT:This report concerns the accomplishments of a “buddy” system whereby 33 psychiatric inpatients worked with the patients on a Geriatric Unit of a state hospital. ABSTRACT:For the treatment of non‐digitalis‐induced ventricular ectopic rhythms, the effect of diphenylhydantoin was studied in 5 patients and compared with the effect of placebo in 5 control patients. For the first three weeks the dosage of diphenylhydantoin was 100 mg four times daily. Then, for maintenance therapy during the rest of the three‐month study, the dosage was reduced to 100 mg three times daily. ABSTRACT:A case of myxedema associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, myasthenia gravis, and granulocytic leukemia is described. The patient had the classical symptoms and signs of hypothyroidism. Profound myopathy, ptosis, and bulbar signs suggested myasthenia gravis and the diagnosis was confirmed by an anticholinesterase test. Treatment with cholinesterase inhibitors was ineffective and ACTH was given for increasing bulbar signs and ventilatory failure. Severe pneumonia supervened and was thought to be the cause of a striking leukemoid blood picture. However, the leukemoid picture persisted after the pneumonia cleared. While convalescing, the patient died suddenly. At autopsy, granulocytic infiltrates of several organs and a hypercellular bone marrow with a preponderance of granulocytes, a decrease in erythrocytic elements and virtual absence of megakaryocytes were consistent with a diagnosis of granulocytic leukemia. The thyroid disease and the myasthenia gravis may have had an immunological basis and this may also have played a role in the development of the granulocytic leukemia.

ABSTRACT:The authors summarize their 15 articles in this series on predictive medicine. Present health evaluation programs are disease‐oriented rather than health‐oriented. Health statistics usually are reported in terms of mortality and morbidity rates. Little space is given to nonspecific ailments which may be the forerunners of chronic disease. The purpose of a predictive medicine program is to anticipate and prevent disease rather than merely to identify and treat it. Conventional medicine is not coping with the problems. ABSTRACT:Four cases of gastric ulcer and iron deficiency anaemia in a geriatric hospital unit are described. A special feature in 2 cases was a high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and positive gastroscopy findings for cancer after x‐ray (barium meal) examination had indicated a normal stomach. It is suggested that the differential diagnosis between gastric ulcer and gastric cancer sometimes can be made on the basis of the ESR, especially if a high ESR is the only abnormality.
