ABSTRACTIn a Baltimore geriatric center and hospital, a program was developed to individualize the treatment of critically and terminally ill patients. Part of this program was an effort to involve the patients themselves in the discussion of their personal wishes, and the provision of a set of guidelines for staff members to help them individualize the care of the patients. Some of the practical problems involved in the application of these ethical ideals are discussed. Merely implementing the protocol helped staff members to become more aware of these complex questions. Physicians should deal forthrightly with “right‐to‐die” and associated issues. ABSTRACTSenile dementia is one of the most important medical‐social‐economic problems facing our society, estimated to affect some 60 percent of nursing home patients and of persons residing in the community. ABSTRACTThe weights of hearts among 110 octogenarians were studied. At autopsy they ranged from 174 to 785 gm, which is more than the customary norm for adults. In only 15 subjects were the hearts considered completely normal. Other hearts showed hypertrophy, friable muscle, fatty infiltration, brown atrophy, a flabby myocardium, valvular changes, and atheroma or calcification of the coronary arteries. The frequency of these changes and their relationship to heart weight are discussed. A previous study of heart weights among 39 nonagenarians had shown weights ranging from 159 to 539 gm — somewhat less than those among the octogenarians. ABSTRACTThe aging game, a simple yet effective educational method for teaching gerontology and geriatric medicine, is described. Groups of up to 20 students participate. A series of 100 cards bearing statements about old age, some of which are true and some of which are false, are distributed among them. By exchanging cards and by gradual grouping of the students, the participants endeavor to secure a hand in which all the statements are true. The game ends with all cards being reviewed by the teacher and the participants together.
