摘要:
ABSTRACTThe autopsy findings in a 29‐year‐old male with Werner's syndrome are presented, with a review of similar data on 17 autopsy cases reported in the literature. The pathologic findings in this new case were scleroderma‐like skin atrophy, arteriosclerosis, and atrophy of the endocrine glands (including the genital organs). In the reported cases of Werner's syndrome, as in the present example, the authors were unable to identify any responsible organ or system. However, they suggest that connective tissue, widely distributed throughout the entire body, may play an important role. The possible abnormal metabolism of connective tissue in Werner's syndrome deserves further

摘要:
ABSTRACTA study based on 55 hospital patients (age groups 40–59, 60–69, 70–79) demonstrated a significant correlation between the glomerular filtration rate (as expressed by endogenous creatinine clearance) and the mean urinary calcium concentration. Excluded were patients with thyroidal or hypophyseal disorders, osteoporosis, renal stones, immobilizing conditions, or those treated with corticosteroids. The study patients had a normal fluid intake and did not receive any diuretics. The urinary calcium concentration test is less laborious and less liable to laboratory errors than the creatinine clearance test, which requires a 24‐hour urine collection. Because of the gradual decrease in the glomerular filtration rate in the elderly, this test should be of value in geriatric p

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe effects of cefazolin were studied in 15 hospital patients (average age, 67) with respiratory‐tract infections. The infections were chiefly bronchopneumonia caused by organisms such as D. pneumoniae, Staph. aureus, or E. coli. In 13 of the 15 patients the results were excellent to good (eradication of the primary pathogen and clinical improvement); in the other 2 patients the response was fair. Intramuscular injection was well tolerated and only one patient complained of pain at the site of injection; no other adverse clinical effects were observed. In the laboratory determinations, including liver and kidney function tests, the only abnormalities were 2 cases in which the Coombs' test gave positive results without hemolysis. Cefazolin seems to be a safe and effective antibiotic for the treatment of respiratory‐tract infections caused by cefazolin‐susceptible orga

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe results of a hypertension screening project conducted in senior citizen agencies in Manhattan are presented. The prevalence of hypertension among elderly females tended to conform to the data of the Nation Health Survey of 1960–62, but the prevalence among elderly males was much higher than in the National Survey. The prevalence of hypertension varied inversely with the educational level. Various implications for future medical evaluations of the elderly are discussed, based on the clinical and social data obtaine

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis is the first double‐blind study in outpatients to evaluate the effectiveness of dihydrogenated ergot alkaloids (DEA) (Hydergine) versus papaverine in the treatment of selected symptoms associated with mental aging. In addition, this is the first study comparing these two pharmacologic agents in relatively young geriatric patients, with a mean age in the mid‐sixties. After twelve weeks of treatment, ratings of overall clinical condition and global change showed that the 26 patients given DEA improved more than twice as much as the 27 patients given papaverine. Of the 14 individual symptoms rated, 13 improved significantly more in the DEA group than in the papaverine group. These symptoms included confusion, dizziness, unsociability, depressive mood, and mental alertness. Other data confirmed the generally superior results with DEA.In view of its demonstrated beneficial clinical actions and of its notable scarcity of contraindications or side effects, DEA appears to represent a significant pharmacologic contribution to the care of elderly persons showing selected symptoms of mental and functional decl

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis investigation was undertaken to determine whether there is a decrease of granulopoietic activity in subjects of the geriatric age group. Colony‐stimulating factor (CSF) is an alpha glycoprotein which causes proliferation of granulocytes in vitro. A study was made of the variation in the level of CSF with age and the state of health in 78 subjects. They were classified into two groups—young (ages 22–60) and old (ages 70–94). The state of health was classified as normal, acute disease, or chronic disease. The results showed that serum CSF does vary with age and health. The CSF levels were higher in the young than in the old. For both age groups, the CSF levels were elevated in acute disease, and subnormal in chronic

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe author emphasizes the importance of certain factors in the initial assessment of geriatric patients. The geriatrician should be a keen observer, and not neglect simple tests. Thus diagnostic mistakes will be kept to a minimum and he will be rewarded by the improved welfare of his patients.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe official representative of the American Geriatrics Society reports on the 27th Annual Conference on Aging held at Ann Arbor, Michigan, August 5–7, 1974. The subject matter revolved about the aged population and State‐wide systems of education. Plenary sessions, workshops, seminars and discussion groups filled three busy days. Higher education played a most important role in planning the training of professional and administrative personnel in the various fields of gerontology. Research programs were emphasized, as were educational opportunities for the elde
