摘要:
AbstractThis article utilises unit record data from the1989–90 National Health Surveyto explore the relationships between low income and perceptions of health and happiness. After describing how the key variables were constructed, attention is focused on the incidence of perceived poor health and unhappiness among those individuals living in income units on either side of a poverty threshold related to the Henderson poverty line. The results reveal that those in poverty generally have poorer health and are less happy than those above the poverty threshold. The observed differences are statistically significant for many income unit types, particularly non‐aged single people and couples with children. Attention then turns to exploring how health and happiness vary across the deciles of the income distribution. Again, significant differences are revealed, particularly when more sophisticated distributional measures are employed. Finally, consideration is given to the possibility that the results reflect reverse causality, and that the observed correlations incorporate the role of intervening variab

摘要:
AbstractThis article investigates the existence of economies of scale and input cross and direct price elasticities of demand in the Australian motor vehicle industry. Our estimated cost elasticities were less than one (consistent with economies of scale), but not significantly less than one at the 10 per cent level for two versions of the model. However, the estimated cost elasticity was significantly less than one at approximately the 2.5 per cent level for a third. Thus, these results give some credibility to the infant industry argument for continued assistance to the Australian transportation equipment industry. A four‐input model separating domestic and foreign intermediate goods inputs suggests that while restrictions on imported components may have given some short‐run relief to the domestic components industry and increased the demand for labour domestically, they decreased the demand for domestic capital. Although the infant industry argument could support short‐run protectionist policies for the industry, it appears that such policies regarding the Australian motor vehicle industry must be designed carefully with a specified phase‐out period if long‐term adverse results are to b

摘要:
AbstractBy using the concept of the constant employment budget balance and changes in real public debt it is possible to determine the size of Australian Government's real structural budget imbalances during the postwar era. In doing so it is possible to partially explain the short run fluctuations in economic activity and comment on the ability of the Federal Government to influence the level of economic activity.
