AbstractRecent movements in the Trade Weighted Indexes (MI) of Australia's nominal and real exchange rates are documented. AbstractThe article reviews the performance of flexible exchange rates in the last twelve years and considers whether there are any real alternatives to the present regime. It first presents an ‘idealised’ version of what flexible exchange rates were sup posed to do; it then shows how different the reality has been. The article evaluates, in some detail, two claims made for the flexible exchange rate system: that nominal rates would tend to move in line with relative prices and with other changes in fundamentals and that it would provide macroeconomic independence. AbstractThis article concentrates on the wages policy aspects of the Accord. The Statement of the Accord, the National Economic Summit Communique and the Principles for National Wage Cases, are considered in the context of the rationales for wages policy. The apparent early successes of the Accord, followed by signs, such as the emergence of wage drift, that it will eventually break down, are outlined. Long‐term political economy aspects of the Accord are considered, which suggest that it is unlikely to represent a long‐term solution.
