Standards of Care (SOC) have been developed to help nurses in all areas provide consistent high-quality patient care. SOC act as guidelines to provide an organized, holistic approach. Because SOC are only guidelines, they need to be adapted to the individual.As continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is a new treatment modality, these authors developed SOC particular to the CAPD patient.Three standards have been authored: General CAPD Standards of Care; Diabetic CAPD Standards of Care; and Blind CAPD Standards of Care.Each standard has its own education fact sheet. These fact sheets help the primary nurse to better understand the patient's treatment. For some patients, all three standards will need to be utilized.

When the hospital social worker called and said she had a patient who lived on top of Campbell's Mountain, I was a little apprehensive. It was a long way from civilization, and the road wasn–t much more than a cowpath. But when she said there was no phone and that the old lady was in the habit of taking occasional “pot-shots”at strangers with an old sawed-off shotgun, I knew I didn't like the sound of this case at all!
