摘要:
At the same time that community-based organizations have been called upon to address alcohol and other drug abuse (AOD) within a community perspective, they have been confronted with the need to provide services within a cultural context. This article will present a case study of one community-based organization's efforts to utilize natural support systems to reach youth-of-color involved with AOD. This article will provide administrators/planners with an understanding and appreciation of the key issues/challenges they will face in developing interventions seeking to involve natural support systems.

摘要:
Ambulatory medical detoxification for alcohol has become increasingly more popular in the last several years as a cost-effective alternative to inpatient withdrawal. Critical research has demonstrated both effectiveness and safety for carefully selected patients. This article will review admission criteria for ambulatory detoxification programs including: general, drug, medical, psychological, and social. Further, I will detail patient management guidelines that are unique to ambulatory care. These guidelines will summarize the initial assessment, supportive care, medication management, and follow-up. The guidelines help assure a safe withdrawal from alcohol in an ambulatory setting.

摘要:
A national survey of 2000 Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors was conducted to determine their ethical beliefs and practices in the area of dual relationships. The results were compared to a national study of psychologists, pychiatrists, and social workers around 13 areas of practice behavior involving dual relationship situations. No significant difference was found between the two groups.

摘要:
This study examines two treatment interventions for patients in the pre-recovery stage of addiction. Patients in the Psychoeducation group, compared to the Recovery-oriented group, demonstrated greater duration in treatment and agreement with the first three steps of the Twelve Steps, measured by a Steps Questionnaire. The study is based on a new model for stage of recovery, which compliments the Twelve Step recovery model and includes eight "Beginning Steps" as a pre-requisite to becoming "recoveryready."

摘要:
Focus group sessions were conducted with chemical dependency program inpatients to explore their perceptions of continuing care treatment. Sessions focused upon expectations of benefits, costs, and obstacles to aftercare participation. Focus group participants tended to expect an immediate reduction in some benefits and increase in costs from continuing care treatment. Benefits, especially those derived from intimacy with family members, were anticipated more often in the long-term future rather than immediately. Such patient expectations therefore made continuing care treatment appear less attractive. Suggestions for improving patient appreciation of short-term benefits and for removing barriers to continuing care participation arc discussed.

摘要:
This study examined the effects of parental alcoholism on gender and recovery maintenance variables among 71 alcoholics in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) groups located in Southern New Jersey. Results included significant interaction effects with Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST) scores and gender with attendance at AA meetings, length of sobriety and the number of AA promises received. Specific group differences included: (1) Non-ACOA males attended more weekly AA meetings than did Non-ACOA females, (2) Non-ACOA women had longer sobriety than ACOA women, (3) Non-ACOA women claimed to have received more AA promises than Non-ACOA males.

摘要:
Female offenders are entering the criminal justice system at a rapidly increasing rate. Women are likely to use alcohol and other drugs during criminal activity. Eight states have females in Boot Camps; data on such programs is limited. This article presents data on one program.

摘要:
Carbohydrate-Deficient transferrin (CDT) is a protein identified by Stibler et al. (1986). This proteins appearance may be a response to acetaldehyde which alters transferrins terminal glycosylation and transport. A total of 21 controls and 62 patients were assayed using conventional biologic markers, CDT, and the CAGE questionnaire. A gender-dependent control range is established and a significance model (p<.OOO1) is presented using CDT, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GT), and the CAGE questionnaire. The association of this marker with established screening tools demonstrates potential in both clinical screening and forensic medicine in identifying excessive alcohol consumption.
