摘要:
Meta-recovery is a model of recovery based on the principles of psychosynthesis. Whereas recovery in AA involves a lateral shift in identification from an addictive to a recovering way of being in the world, meta-recovery encourages transcendence of the dualism of AA-based recovery through a synthesis of the addictive and recovering parts of the personality. This theory has a potentially significant impact on the healing of those seeking recovery from alcoholism and other addictions.

摘要:
This paper describes problems clients with alcoholism may experience once they have begun recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous: sponsorship, spirituality and working the steps. Of special interest are those in AA who are also in therapy and the difficulties encountered engendered by misconceptions on the part of the client and counselor. A procedure is described by which the counselor can work the steps with the client as a foundation of counseling.

摘要:
Therapists and researchers concerned about recovering alcoholics provide substantial insights into the recovery process for individuals. More recent models explain changes in family dynamics during recovery as well. This article introduces a Social Network Model that focuses on stages in relationships between family members and persons outside the family who could be potential supports. Recognizing and focusing on the current stage of an individual, the family members, and the family with outsiders can make aftercare programs much more effective.

摘要:
The relationship between cocaine addiction and alcoholism has been documented in epidemiological and clinical studies. Approximately 80 to 90% of cocaine addicts are also alcoholic. Moreover, a previous study documented a positive family history of alcoholism to be 5O%, similar to the rate for familial alcoholism among alcoholics. The rate for familial drug addiction has been reported to be somewhat lower at 25%. This study further strengthens the relationship between alcohol and cocaine addiction. Among 63 consecutive admissions to an inpatient alcohol and drug addiction unit, the rate of familial alcoholism among cocaine addicts was between 50 and 80%. The rate of a family history of drug dependence in alcoholics and cocaine addicts was between 23 and 40%. The combination of alcohol and cocaine addiction was between 75 and 89%. Other demographic and alcohol/ drug characteristics are included.

摘要:
Several studies have found that panic attacks are frequently reported by alcoholics and that panicking alcoholics appear to have a more serious clinical condition (e.g., associated psychopathology) than their non-panicking counterparts. The present study investigated differences within panicking alcoholics. Specifically, the domains of interest were frequent versus infrequent panickers and alcoholic patients whose panic preceded alcohol abuse versus the converse. Results indicated that panicking alcoholics whose attacks were frequent and began before the onset of alcohol abuse reported more distress more severe symptoms. In addition, a greater proportion of women than men experienced panic attacks (and frequent attacks) prior to abusing alcohol.

摘要:
The purpose of this paper is to present findings from an analysis of demographic, drug use, sexual activities, and HIV serology data collected from a sample of intravenous drug injectors between the ages of 13 and 2l not in drug treatment. Recent studies of adolescent drug injectors have shown that this group is at particularly high risk for HIV infection. They have been found to be at especially high risk due to sexual transmission. The data present here differs from previous reports because HIV serology data were available for analysis. Data were collected at over sixty National AIDS Demonstration Research sites in the United States and Puerto Rico. Largely due to the clandestine nature of illegal drug abuse, the sample is not representative of adolescent injectors not in drug treatment programs. The sample was collected using snowball sampling with repeated first stage contacts. Data were analyzed to investigate the relationships between socioeconomic measures, drugs abused, frequency of drug injection, number of sexual partners, number of same sex sexual partners, accepting money or drugs for sex, and HIV serostatus.

摘要:
Increasingly, applicants to alcoholism and drug addiction treatment are presenting problems with cocaine abuse along with alcohol abuse. Little is known about the characteristics of these poly-drug abusers or how they compare to alcohol abusers. Applicants to treatment who presented alcohol abuse only were compared to those reporting both alcohol and cocaine abuse problems on their demographic characteristics and MMPI profiles. The abuse of cocaine along with alcohol was associated with lower age single marital status and a more disturbed MMPI profiles. Furthermore, several MMPI scales distinguished between the two groups when age differences were statistically accounted for. Such different psychological and demographic profiles between alcohol abusers and abusers of both alcohol and cocaine should be considered in treatment planning.

摘要:
A major health problem in America is the abuse of mind altering drugs (alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, etc.) known collectively in psychiatric terms as Psychoactive Substance Abuse (PASA). Patients with this disease have been known to have alterations in their immune systems, the study of which resulted in the U.S.A. Patent Marker for Inherited Substance Abuse (#5,081,011). Patients and age-matched-sex controls were randomly selected from an urban/rural area and evaluated by a psychiatric team (DSM-III-R criteria). Blood samples were obtained and analyzed for immune and organ function. Further dividing the patients into two groups, Group I-PASA only and Group II-PASA with personality disorders, we found a significant difference (p = .000/F = 44) in U.S.A. Patent Marker identified individuals. Treatment was geared differently for each group, with Group I having the lowest relapse rate.

摘要:
From medical constraints to child care needs, substance- abusing pregnant women present unique challenges for treatment providers. This article provides findings from a statewide survey of treatment providers questioned about the treatment offered pregnant abusers in the State of Iowa. Providers were asked about the incidence of pregnant women seeking treatment, drugs of preference of pregnant women, and services offered these clients. A call is made for treatment approaches which recognize the special needs of pregnant women.
