摘要:
Forty subjects with serious mental illness and alcoholism were interviewed about their experiences with Alcoholics Anonymous. All had attended one or more meetings of special AA groups for dually diagnosed members. Information was obtained about their illness, heir first meeting, how they used the groups, and ways in which they participated in meetings. Investigators found that intensity of AA involvement was related to the degree of comfort they felt in groups. Demographic and personality characteristics did not correlate with involvement. A majority of subjects maintained their involvement in the meetings of special AA groups or in regular AA meetings.

摘要:
Although widely utilized as a source of treatment for family members of alcoholics, the Al-Anon program has not been studied regarding its effectiveness. This study attempted to empirically assess presumed benefits reported by 77 members of Al-Anon programs in Southern Minnesota. To test hypotheses regarding levels of self-esteem and marital adjustment, correlational statistics were used to compare length of membership to results from the Tennessee Self-concept Scale and Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test. Although significant relationships were found between both self-esteem and marital adjustment regarding increased length of membership, confounds and methodological difficulties reduced the impact of these findings.

摘要:
Severity of alcohol dependence was related to variables of sex, age, number of previous treatments, in an inpatient population (N = 706) undergoing treatment for alcohol dependence. A significant difference, in higher levels of dependence, was noted for clients under 30 years and for clients previously treated for alcohol dependence. No difference was noted between females and males.

摘要:
The United States Army Alcohol and Drug Treatment outpatient Program in Augsburg, Germany, conducted a single site treatment evaluation study. Alcohol education, stress management, and values clarification were rated by patients as the most helpful treatment elements. In spite of limited statistical significance, this study suggests patients may benefit from a highly structured, intense psychoeducational rehabilitation program which utilizes a cognitive-behavioral approach.

摘要:
The vocabulary and concepts of medicine, theology, and psychology have all been used to define and discuss alcoholism. Using medical concepts, we discuss the differences between illness and disease, especially in terms of spontaneous recovery. Using theological concepts, we delineate AA's ideas of God regarding its belief system. In terms of psychological constructs an attempt is made to compare a Higher Power to transitional object theory. The authors propose that AA's suggestions act as potential introjects. Moreover, the Higher Power is Thompson's "Hound of Heaven."

摘要:
Previous research has shown that metamemory is not affected by alcohol consumption in non-alcoholics, but that it is affected in Korsakoff patients. In this study, recovering alcoholic, male Army personnel were administered the FACTRETRIEVAL2 program (Wilkinson&Nelson, 1984) to determine if recovering alcoholics would exhibit metamemory deficiencies as compared to non-alcoholic male, Army personnel. There was no suggestion in the data that these recovering alcoholics had any greater difficulty in retrieving general information from long-term memory, in recognizing answers to questions they had missed, or that they exhibited any metamemory deficiencies. Within the limits of this study, the metacognitive measures used found nothing to indicate differences in the accuracy of memory self-awareness of the alcoholic sample.
