摘要:
Because of the particular defensive dynamics of alcoholism, thc intervention of others is often important in motivating alcoholic persons to seek treatment. However, intervention is often confused with coercion, and publicized as threatening the alcoholic person into submission to someone else's wishes. In fact, intervention is a proccss addressed to change in a system of interrelationships. The power of its influence on the drinker derives from the structured clarification of the effects of the drinking on persons or groups other than the drinker him/her self. The rights to these others to speak for, and protect themselves are central to the formulation of the new data to be presented in a meeting with the alcoholic individual. S/he is then invited to join the others in their concern about what is happening to all of them. The intervention process clarifies choices for everyone, and then leaves to the alcoholic person the decision as to whether to opt for treatment or continued drinking.

摘要:
The alcoholic is caught up in a life threatening course of compulsive self destructive behavior which he is powerless to stop on his own. In this paper theories are advanced positing psychological and social forces predisposing the individual to have to hurt himself. It is therefore the therapist's job to represent life to the person, and to communicate it effectively. The paper describes how and why the therapist must creatively design interventions which will grab the patient's attention, and kindle an interest in living and behaving accordingly.

摘要:
This paper describes a treatment approach which focuses on a person's alcoholism as a multi-faceted illness rather than on the person's particular mandate into treatment. Specific techniques for successful referral by the mandating agency, and for successful engagement and treatment outcome by the alcoholism treatment agency flow from this individualized approach. Examples include alcoholic persons who are drinking driver referrals, others whose public assistance is conditional on entering treatment, and others whose mandate involves probation or parole. Client-related factors, treatment program factors, and the systems inter-face between clients and program are discussed.

摘要:
The practitioner working with an alcoholic population is confronted with patients' denial of the disease, resistance to treatment, and dysfunctional patterns of thinking, feeling, and interacting. The article provides a theoretical framework of Gestalt therapy examining its application to the alcoholic's treatment. Practice interventions targeted toward problematic therapeutic issues are discussed. The importance of understanding the alcoholic's intrapsychic/interpersonal system prior to planning and implementing treatment is stressed.

摘要:
People, especially recovering alcoholics often resist feelings, either from fear of the pain involved or fear of losing control. This paper views emotions from a positive perspective: as signals, connectives and directives. Fears of feeling and the defensive methods people have devised to admit and control unwanted emotions are examined. By uncovering and addressing these fears and methods during the recovery process, it is hoped that relapses can be prevented, or at least minimized. Practical tools for increasing emotional awareness and developing communication skills which counselors can use to help clients promote self-esteem and selfconfidence are presented.

摘要:
The 1981 NCA Preliminary Report on Aging and Alcoholism estimated that there are 1-3 million elderly alcoholics yet only 15% are receiving treatment. This paper describes some of the obstacles and issues in identifying and treating elderly alcoholics. A model training program is presented which addresses the training needs of counselors in elderly services and alcoholism services in order for them to provide alcoholism identification, referral and treatment of elderly clientele.

摘要:
This paper reported on an outpatient group phase approach for the treatment of the spouse of an alcoholic. The approach is based on Jackson's Seven Stages of family adjustment. Individual therapy as well as groups provide a continuous support system. The unique aspect of having a group phase approach is that it views the spouse's recovery as a gradual process which enables the spouse to have his or her needs met at various stages in recovery. The spouse's need for treatment is viewed as essential whether or not the alcoholic is in treatment. The approach as described can help the spouses to lead independent, productive and gratifying lives.

摘要:
The authors present several aspects of stress management fur alcoholism treatment personnel. Conceptual data regarding the relationship between the mind and body are presented, as well as the relevance of these data to our health. The relationship between stress, longevity, and the quality of our lives is enumerated, as well as the physiology and psychology of stress. The difficulty of, and necessity for, seeking help is discussed. Finally, the areas of psychotherapy, meditation/visualization, and time management are recommended as some of the many tools available which can aid in one's own personal plan for stress management. The authors also acknowledge areas within agency life which cannot be changed by individuals, but must be addressed in a larger context. Suggestions are made for this process.

摘要:
The intent of this paper is to discuss the components that comprise the practice of supervision-administrative, educative, clinical-beginning with general considerations and then identifying situations specific to the alcoholism field. It is suggested that supervisors in the alcoholism treatment field are exposed to considerable external stress. They are often ill prepared for the supervisory tasks, have conflicting roles to perform, are isolated within the organization and have insufficient resources. In addition, it is felt that some of the most intense stressors derive not only from the system but from the very nature of the disease itself. In the clinical section, distinction between objective and subjective contertransference is made. The parallel between the therapist/client and supervisor/supervisee relationships is identified as the primary tool for helping the worker learn. Case examples are used throughout.
