摘要:
Earlier literature on the wives of alcoholics confused the causes with the effects of alcoholism. Wives of alcoholics were thought to be highly neurotic contributors to their husbands' illness. Furthermore, sexist biases influenced opinion and research with the result that while wives were blamed for their spouses' illness, husbands of alcoholic wives were considered blameless victims. Despite recent gains in the understanding of alcoholism and its effects on family dynamics, treatment of alcoholic marriages continues to reflect subtle sexist attitudes and values. For example, wives are often viewed as little more than adjuncts to their husbands' treatment. Such approaches undermine reality-centered and effective treatment. A model for counseling wives of alcoholics is proposed which addresses her special and separate concerns.

摘要:
There has been some talk but little research on staff burnout in treatment of alcoholics. This exploratory study of burnout in an alcohol detoxification center found that recovered alcoholics were more familiar with the concept of burnout, knew more fellow-workers who had burned out, and had more likely burned out themselves. Recovered alcoholics, if employed as counselors, seem at more risk of burning out than other workers in detox. At the same time, their special situation increases the chances in informal work group relations which act to slow down if not alleviate the symptoms of burnout.

摘要:
A survey of A.A. members and professional alcoholism treatment center directors elicited responses to ideology scales developed for this research. Alcoholics Anonymous often has been called ideological, as though professionals did not also adhere to ideologies. This report examines the ideologies of both A.A.s and professionals and hypothesizes that ideological differences influence mutual cooperation between them. Both ideology scales elicited significantly different attitudes between A.A. and professional rcspondents on the majority of items. When comparisons were controlled for perceived degree of cooperation between them, the noncooperators on both sides differed with each other much more than did cooperating respondents.

摘要:
This paper looks at the resisrance manifested by Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offenders who are court-mandated into treatment. An exploration is made of how the DWI offender manifests resistance, and recommendations are put forth which may assist the alcoholism counselor in working more effectively with this population.

摘要:
Thc clinical implications of research on alcoholism in women, treatment continuation and effective treatment services are discussed. Structural, personal and environmental barriers to treatment frequently are greater for women alcoholics than for men alcoholics. Personal and situational characteristics such as low self-esteem, cognitions about the antecedents and effects of alcohol consumption, and being a victim of physical and sexual abuse have implications for the type and course of treatment for women. Significant others' opposition to treatment is a key consideration in outreach attempts to bring alcoholic women into treatment. Other important considerations are these women's possible distrust of health professionals and lack of financial resources, as well as the lack of desired support services such as women's groups and treatment for family members.
