摘要:
This article conceptualizes three stages in Addiction: 1) the development of the addiction, 2) the penetration of the denial system, and 3) the recovery process. The role of the alcoholism counselor is described as helping the addicted person deal with the five issues of abstinence, powerlessness, identity messages, new coping mechanisms, and new highs. By working on these issues together an opportunity is created to allow the person's natural internal healing to proceed.

摘要:
Alcoholism is presented as an insidious, multifaceted family disease. The alcoholic, the effects of alcoholism upon the family and the major roles assumed by family members are summarized. Major resistances and issues which arise during treatment and ways to deal with these issues are presented. Problems leading to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis and ways to improve differential diagnosis are discussed. Finally, the paper describes the essential roles played by education programs, self-help groups and family intervention in the treatment process.

摘要:
This article describes a conceptual model for assessment and treatment planning activities with alcoholic clients through the identification of forces which act to enhance sobriety as well as those which jeopardize sobriety. The six step model allows both the clinician and client to recognize these forces and maximize the potential for recovery. The steps are (1) obtaining information; (2) identifying positive and negative forces in relation to sobriety; (3) prioritizing forces; (4) identifying problems and developing goals; (5) treatment strategies; and (6) evaluation. This model is applicable within any treatment facility providing alcoholism services where there is an emphasis on individualized treatment planning.

摘要:
Since most people have no idea alcoholism is an illness, they often attribute the behavior of their family member to lack of willpower or lack of caring. Families of alcoholics have learned through experience how to cope with this behavior. Alcoholics manipulate their families with words; because of this, families resist accepting the words of the counselor as he or she attempts to teach the family about the illness. Two examples are given which illustrate a method of experiential teaching which can help counter this resistance. Denial and the disease concept are addressed.

摘要:
This article provides instructional information for counselors on helping alcohol abuse clients "prepare for interviews" through adoption of verbal and nonverbal techniques. Specifically, verbal guidelines include verbal tone and word selection, and for nonverbals the components stress physical and facial gestures. Underlying instruction is the principle that an interview is a reciprocal process between interviewer and interviewee. Potential barriers interfering with successful dialogue result from incorrect inferences and maladaptive reactions to setting events.
