摘要:
Until the, past decade, research related to women's patterns of substance abuse has rarely been reported. Although women's rates of substance use and abuse are generally lower than men's, the social, psychological, physiological and economic effects of substance abuse in women are particularly severe. This paper reviews patterns of substance abuse unique to women and examines their implications for treatment of women. Recommendations include revision of program and reimbursement policies and development of gender-sensitive assessment and intervention protocols. It is suggested that advocacy, parent training, and concrete, medical and vocational services be incorporated into treatment programming for female substance abusers.

摘要:
Conclusions about the effectiveness of inpatient treatmen1 for alcoholism and other drug dependencies, and about the length of stay for such treatment, based on the Miller and Hester study (1986) are derived from treatment modalities excluding the Minnesota model. Managed care initiatives which limit access to treatment centers following the Minnesota model are inappropriate and unjust if such decisions are based on the findings reviewed in Miller and Hester (1986).

摘要:
The Alcoholism Intervention is a specific therapeutic technique used to motivate an alcoholic to enter treatment; participants confront the alcoholic with the damage the drinking has done and with the consequences that will occur if treatment is rejected. According to the conflict-theory model of decision making, an alcoholic's decision to accept treatment is related to the level of stress in the Intervention. Results provided some support for this relationship and a speculative model of practice is presented.

摘要:
Many Native American communities have made substantial commitments to the prevention of drug and alcohol use and abuse, particularly among their youth and families. Native American people have benefitted from the commitment of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (C.S.A.P.-formerly Office for Substance Abuse Prevention). This paper describes a "logic model" framework which has potential for planning, implementation. and evaluation of American Indian youth drug and alcohol prevention programs.

摘要:
This article reports the results of research designed to identify personality characteristics and psychopathology of adult children of alcoholics (ACOA profile), using the Clinical Analysis Questionnaire. Subjects were divided into four groups based on whether they were alcoholic adults who were not ACOAs (n = 73, alcoholic adults who were ACOAs (n = 91), adults who were not alcoholics but were ACOAs (n = 60), and controls who were neither alcoholics or ACOAs (n = 51). Analysis of the data revealed significant differences exist among the four groups that suggest a personality profile unique to adult children of alcoholics does not exist, however, one for alcoholics who are also ACOAs does.

摘要:
This study explored whether family secrecy might be a potential mediator of later adult psychological functioning in the offspring of the family. Results revealed that family secrecy was related to psychological well-being in adulthood. The number of potentially secretive events, as well as the negativity of the family environment were strongly associated with poorer psychological functioning.

摘要:
Few studies report any information on the motherhood status of Ihe clients in substance abuse treatment, and even fewer explore the role of children on the recovery process. We report descriptive data on 49 substance abusing women, 32 of' whom were the primary caretakers of minor-aged children.

摘要:
There are no systematic studies of alcolholism or alcohol abuse in patients with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). These case histories illustrate how such patients may present at alcohol treatment vromams, and how failure to recognize their FAS symptomatology can result in inappropriate diagnoses andl managemknt. Awareness of the dual diagnosis of alcoholism and FAS can lead to a more successful treatment outcome.
