This article reports the results of a study examining self-efficacy and relapse in patients treated in a substance abuse facility for alcoholism. Relapse was measured as a two-stage process of "Lapse" and "Relapse." The results did not support the previous findings that self-efficacy ratings measured post treatment were valid predictors of treatment outcome status. In examining the results, it is proposed that a condition of "post treatment denial" is operating among patients.

A group of recovering alcoholics in A.A. is compared with a group of non-problem drinkers. Measures of locus of control, emotional maturity and intimacy with parents are used as points of comparison. The A.A. group differs significantly with the other group in its greater belief in an external locus of control, in its greater emotional dependency and its lower intimacy level with parents. A linear relationship is found between length of sobriety and an internal locus of control in the recovering group.

Mirror image therapy is a technique that has been effectively used in substance abuse treatment programs. This article explores the dynamics of the mirror phenomenon and describes the process of assigning an individual who has already undergone both inpatlent and outpatient treatment to other sites where patients are just beginning a program. The therapeutic model is based on successful application with impaired professionals in the Atlanta, Georgia substance abuse treatment community.

There have been few outcome studies on the Al-Anon component of A.A. In a convenience sample of 50 A.A. members, this study found no significant difference on reported family stress scores (IFR) between those who had a family member attending Al- Anon and those who did not have a family member attending. However, a significant correlation was found between increased duration of family member Al-Anon attendance and lower reported family stress scores for the A.A. member and the Al-Anon member. Al-Anon attendance was also significantly related to continuous attendance of A.A. by the alcoholic.

The incidence of perceived parental substance abuse, childhood unhappiness and recalled family stressors were investigated among 713 college students. Twenty-five percent of these participants reported they were adult children of substance abusers (ACOSA's). The primary findings were: (1) ACOSA'S, in comparison to their classmates, were significantly more likely to recall their childhoods as unhappy and stressful; and (2) among the ACOSA's, the stressors most closely related to childhood unhappiness were emotional abuse and neglect by a parent, frequent parental anger, frequent family financial problems, physical abuse by a parent and chaotic living conditions.

This study compared three groups on the three global indices and nine symptom dimensions of the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI): 54 alcoholic adult children of alcoholics (ACOA's), 32 alcoholic non-ACOA's, and 39 non-alcoholic ACOA's. The general hypothesis was that there would not be differences in the degree of symptoms reported between these groups. This hypothesis, in large measure, was supported, as only 2 dimensions of the BSI showed any differences.

A case study is presented of a middle class cocaine addict at a chemical dependency specialty hospital. The program utilizes an innovative medical team model, with an emphasis on comprehensive diagnostic assessments, individualized treatment planning, a wide variety of therapeutic options, 12-step involvement, relapse prevention training and aftercare planning. Practical guidelines are presented for the treatment of patients addicted to cocaine.
