The therapeutic efficacy of AA, though acknowledged, is little understood. An analysis of the addictive experience is conducted to provide explanatory hypotheses for the success of AA. The addictive experience is characterized by intensity of feelings which cannot be rendered symbolically via language. Out of this mode of experiencing emerges three phenomena: (1) an alleration in the sense of the movement of time; (2) a sense of alienation and lack of connection to others; (3) a lack of sense of agency and the inability for self/affect regulation. These results are brought into dialogue with the AA recovery program and AA is found to specifically address the problematic modes of experiencing characteristic of the addicted person.

Fifty adults enrolled in an inner-city alcoholism clinic were interviewed to determine their knowledge about HIV/AIDS and transmission routes and to clarify their behavioral risk factors. Findings revealed that the sample had fairly good to excellent HIV/ AIDS knowledge. They possessed considerable misinformation about correct condom use, however, and knowledge levels were not correlated significantly with safer sexual practices. Men, younger women, and drinking clients engaged in more high risk sexual activities than did other respondents. The survey's findings have implications for AIDS prevention efforts with this population: (1) Assessment of differential HIV/AIDS risk factors should be incorporated routinely into alcoholism counseling; (2) interventions must be individualized to address specific risk factors and client beliefs; (3) specific skill development strategies that address negotiations in sexual encounters and which teach correct condom use should be added to AIDS information programs; and, (4) alcohol and other drug use must be linked explicitly to continued risk for HIV infection.

Risk of suicide was compared for Native- and Anglo Canadians attending a chemical abuse treatment center. Over 50% of the subjects in both groups were defined as being at risk of attempting suicide on the basis of self-report questionnaires. At risk subjects of both groups scored higher on the Beck Depression Inventory and various features of panic attacks compared to nonrisk individuals. Native- and Anglo Canadians at risk for suicide did not differ on most demographic or psychopathology variables. However, Native-Canadians who had not completed high school and/or who were unemployed were at greater suicide risk when compared to Anglo-Canadians or Natives who were employed and who had completed high school, and Anglo-Canadians who had not completed high school or were not employed. These results suggest that Natives are not at increased risk for suicide compared to non-narives when socioeconomic factors are comparable.

Case management has become a popular method of service delivery in many human service fields, including mental health and alcohol and drug treatment. By focusing on the problems in living faced by clients. his style of helping has direct relevance for those who seek employee assistance services and those that sponsor them. Additionally, by embodying a generalist perspective, case managers are also adroit at assessing problems that emanate from organizational structure and culture. This paper explicates the philosophy of strengths-based case management services and offers practical examples of the case management process.

Sons and daughters of alcohol-abusers and non-alcohol- abusers were compared on multiple dimensions of temperament. the family environment scale, and a demographic inventory. The offspring of alcohol-abusers differed from the comparison sample on indices of family pathology and instability, several dimensions of temperament, their perceptions of their family of origin, and their own history of alcohol and drug related problems.

An attempt was made to validate Woititz's (1983) 13 characteristics of Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs) in a clinical sample. Clinical ACOAs, nonclinical ACOAS and non-ACOAS were compared on these characteristics using both objective personality measures and a problem checklist. In addition, clinical ACOAs were surveyed about their experiences in treatment. While some differences were found between the groups on the problem checklist, only one difference (in an unexpected direction) was found between the groups when measuring the characteristics with standardized personality measures. As a group, clinical ACOAs were satisfied with their treatment, but saw the negative effects of their ACOA status as limited lo relationships with adult family members. The results do not support the validity of Woititz's characteristics. Implications for diagnosis and treatment, and the future use of the ACOA label are discussed.

Issues related to the rehabilitation of individuals with a disability who simultaneously present with a substance abuse disorder are reviewed. Causal factors resulting in treatment failures or limited or partial rehabilitation are examined. Disabilities are discussed in general but particular emphasis is placed on physical impairments. It is essential that helping professionals need to be aware of the special needs and problems of multidisabled individuals. Areas in which additional research is needed are proposed.

Various research studies have suggested that an external locus of control regarding drinking-related behavior inhibits recovery from alcoholism. The relative influence of alcoholism and parental alcoholism upon drinking-related locus of control was the focus of the present study. Subjects who were both alcoholics and the adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) were found to have a much higher extenal drinking-related locus of control than persons with only one of these two conditions. Alcoholics who were not ACOA were found to have a higher level of externalily than subjects who were ACOA but not alcoholics, who, in, turn, were more external in their control orientation than subjects who were neither alcoholics nor ACOA. Of particular importance was the finding that the interaction of alcoholism and parental alcoholism was a predictor of drinking related locus of control (p = .08), suggesting that the effect of these two conditions upon externality may not be purely cumulative.

This paper describes a treatment program for adolescents in an alternative high school. The program includes he adolescent substance battery, student assistance services, and treatment modalities for adolescents who have used drugs. Assessment and diagnosis, the development of treatment tracks, and objectives of the program are described. Treatment issues such as substance misuse and abuse, chemical dependency, and defensiveness need extensive consideration when implementing programs for adolescents using drugs. This article serves as a stimulus in designing, planning, and implementing adolescent treatment programs.

Project LIFE was comprised of two training efforts: a three-day program (Living in Freedom Everyday) and a five-day program (Living in Freedom Early). The project was a response to the need for more substance abuse prevention education in rural school districts. During its first year of implementation, the project was successful in meeting its objectives. Eighty-eight schools and 12 community agency personnel participated in an intensive training program. A central aspect of the program was teams of participants developing, implementing and evaluating action plans. The plans composed strategies directed toward the school district's drug-free policies, classroom curricula, staff inservice sessions, and community/parent awareness programs. Site visits to 22 participating school districts took place three months after the training. Seventy-one of the proposed 77 strategies were achieved as reported by participants. These results along with the methodology of action planning are described. Project LIFE represents a promising effort in assisting rural school personnel in substance abuse prevention education.
