摘要:
Adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) have come under the scrutiny of therapists and researchers interested in understanding if these individuals comprise a special client population that might require specific therapeutic factors ACOAs perceive as the most helpful to them in psychotherapy groups as compared to non- ACOAs being treated concurrently in the same groups. The subjects were 92 group members (48 ACOAs and 44 non- ACOAs) who were participating in ongoing heterogeneous outpatient psychotherapy groups. Each subject completed Yalom's 60 item, seven pile "therapeutic factors" Q-sort- The Hotelling's T square was used to compare the means of the two groups. There were no significant difference among ACOAs and non- ACOAs in the perceived importance of the therapeutic factors. Self-understanding, cohesion, catharsis, and interpersonal learning were the factors most valued and instillation of hope, altruism, guidance, and identification were the least important factors for both ACOAs and non-ACOAs. The results suggest that whether or not ACOAs are a distinctive personality and clinical population their therapeutic needs in groups may not differ from non-ACOP6.

摘要:
Interventions based upon collaboration with natural support systems offer much promise for the field of alcohol and other drug abuse (AOD), particularly in conununities of color. The emerging acceptance of cultural competence facilitates the use of natural support systems in the development of interventions. This article will describe a program that utilizes natural support systems in three communities-of-color in a northern California city and will provide the reader with an understanding of the challenges and rewards of using these natural systems to reach undervalued populations.

摘要:
Braithwaite's theory of reintegrative shaming emphasizes the important roles played by satisfaction of intimacy and belonging needs for development of healthy individuals and their social groups. The following article adapts the theory to chemical recovery groups, suggesting that the same needs satisfaction may provide greater success in recovery outcomes.

摘要:
An increasine: body of literature indicates that successful treatment of addictive disorders requires an array of strategies based on specific client needs. Solution focused therapy is one means of tailoring therapeutic interventions to the unique characteristics of individual clients. This article describes this treatment modality, its application to addictive disorders, and the health based paradigm which serves as the foundation for its implementation in an outpatient treatment clinic.

摘要:
Currently there exists a proliferation of self-help literature on codependence and a lack of scientific inquiry on this topic. This paper examines the use of group counseling with self-identified codependent individuals. Following 16 weeks of group treatment, participants changed significantly on a measure of codependence, the Spann-Fischer Codependence Scale (Fischer, Spann,&Crawford, 1991), and on four personality scales from the Millon Cliical Multiaxial Inventory-I1 (Millon. 1987). These preliminary results indicate that group counseling appears to reduce dependence. Also the Spann-Fischer Codependence Scale appears to assess codependence adequately and could be used with caution in pychotherapeutic practice.

摘要:
The addictions treatment field has come under increased attack for basing much of its intervention on research and theory drawn from white male experiences with addiction (Gornberg&Nirenberg, 1993; Bepko, 1991; Covington, 1991; Forth-Fiegan, 1991). The goal of this project is to review the literature for information regarding women in treatment. The literature review reminds us that women stand in the center of an intricate network consisting of cultural, community, economic and familial connections and expectations. We must acknowledge the importance of these factors and begin to build our treatment programs for women around these concerns rather than continuing to layer these concerns on top of our traditional treatment responses.
