Kakawis, a treatment center for Native Americans troubled by substance abuse, has a relatively high success rate in producing sobriety. Its treatment has been based on a fusion of psychological techniques with Native approaches and values. This paper reports ethnographic research on Kakawis, including participant observation during the course of one treatment session, and continued follow-up.

This study presents data demonstrating a groupwork model integrating a behavioral parent training group and a children's group. The parent training and children's groups were conducted separately, but concurrently, and incorporated the unique issues raised in families when one of its adult members is a recovering addict. The parent group developed behavioral interventions dealing with parent-child interactional problems, which were evaluated by parent's recording data at home: older children's home intervention attempts were measured using a subjective 10 point scale; younger children's in-group behavior was monitored using a 7 key-behavior checklist. The results showed that this concurrent groupwork model is a viable way to integrate teaching parenting skills with other important issues in the treatment of recovering families.

This study attempted to empirically test one of the primary clinical observations which inform codependency Theory. That is that wives of alcoholics, or codependents, have an incapacity for experiencing mature emotional intimacy which antedates the marriage to an alcholic. It was hypothesized that this pre-existing incapacity for experiencing intimacy would manifest itself in a significant relationship outside of the marital dyad (i.e., with the codependent's closest friend). Despite widespread professional and public acceptance of Codependency as an identifiable unique diagnostic entity such acceptance has been solely based on clinical observation without reference to prior related empirical research on wives of alcoholics. This present study stands as the first empirical research testing a hypothesized personality deficit central to the personality configuration of the codependent.

Little is known about which treatment programs are most successful with homeless substance abusing persons, or how to recruit them into using those programs. A sobering-up station and a jail liaison were designed as the primary outreach components for recruiting men into the case management core of Project Connect in Louisville, Kentucky. Among 1,600 men who had contact with these outreach components, 11 percent accepted case management within a year, but none of those who visited it a single lime or only had contact with the jail liaison were recruited. The frequency of visiting the sobering-up station was the single most important factor, followed in order of importance by jail stays, age, and the interaction between race and the frequency of sobering up station visits. The model accounts for over half of the dispersion in loglinear analysis.

A typology of elderly alcohol abusers was developed on the basis of case studies conducted at an outreach addictions treatment program for the elderly. Three main types were defined: chronic alcohol abuser (abusive drinking primarily maintained by a life of habitual consumption and a lack of alternative activities), reactive problem drinker (alcohol abuse developed and maintained in response to a loss, such as ill health or death of a spouse), and problem drinkers whose drinking seemed to be interrelated with psychatric or connitive problems. Case descriptions are provided to illustrate each type and the treatment implications of typology are discussed.

A survey of a random sample of 120 alcoholism counselors in Wisconsin was conducted to determine the effects of credentialing on the treatment process. Outcomes were frequently evaluated for recovering and nonrecovering counselors. Counselors with graduate degrees here less likely to be recovering, worked nearly exclusively in outpatient settings, spent a higher percentage of time doing individual counseling and were more likely to attribute the cause of alcoholism to learned behavior in addition to disease. Although theories and techniques revealed no observable significance, there are indications for future studies.

This article focuses on reasons why group psychotherapy is the treatment of choice for individuals who have grown up with alcoholic parents. Yalom's model of group psychotherapy is presented as the preferred choice of treatment because it provides the best systematic description for examiniig the dysfunctional (codependent) styles of the individual members in the here and now of the groups. However, since Yalom's model focuses primarily on the external manifestations of a person's interpersonal conflicts, evidence is presented why the group leader needs to also view the interactions between the group members from an object relations perspective. Balancing both perspectives will allow the group leader to better understand the group member's external interpersonal difficulties and their internal conflicts and distortions.

The purpose of this study was to develop the Mucowski Typology inventory, to test the hypothetical constructs regarding adult children from alcoholic families (ACOAs) prouosed by Claudia Black. This was done in order to discriminate them from others who were not raised in families in which there was alcoholism present. The subjects used in this study included entering freshmen college students and volunteer ACOAs identified through the ACOA Networker. Data from the subjects' responses to the Mucowski Typology Inventory were factor analyzed to establish the structure of the instrument. Results showed that three of Black's hypothesized typologies emerged along with other factors which Wegscheider hypothesized in her typology. Additional factors, the Obstinate Naysayer, Avoider and Stabilizer, also appeared; the current researchers attempted to identify these additional types based upon role characteristics that emerged from the study.

The tragic incidence of substance abuse has recently reached epidemic proportions and is being dramatically felt throughout the United States. Despite heroic efforts at both prevention and intervention, virtually no segment of our society has been exempted from its dire consequences. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence, distribution and impact of substance abuse as related to selected variables. The study involves the identification of demographic correlates and other characteristics of the substance abuse population, as well as an exploratory examination of the way these persons are situated and embroidered into the larger social demographic fabric. The primary data source was the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) used to generate information for the National Center for Health Statistics. The sample for this study was comprised of 62,052 persons who had been interviewed from 23,838 households in 1986. The estimates calculated for this report, however, were based on a projected population of 171,800,848 persons of which 113,818 were identified as being substance abusers. The findings in this study suggest that substance abuse must be understood in terms of its relationship to age, formal education, and marital status. These variables along with income, appear to be the strongest correlates of substance abuse.

In this paper the authors present an integrative model for conceptualizing the alcoholism recovery process. Two important concepts are emphasized-goal setting and responsibility. Clinical appplication of the model is discussed.
