摘要:
Substance abusers and their families come to counselors emotionally distraught and often out of touch with their true feelings. A humorless and narrow view of life is common. How can humor and insight be cultivted, and what is the role of the one in the other? This article presents a systematic analysis of humor as a primary ingredient in successful work with alcoholics and their families. Practical illustrations are provided.

摘要:
The purpose of this article is to examine the parallel in yoga, addiction, and the therapeutic process. Chemical dependency is a self-destructive process that weakens and unbalances the individual physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Yoga is a three-fold process that can rebuild these aspects of self, serving to counteract further progression of the disease. Yoga and meditation can be effective in helping the patient regain his/her vital center of energy, satisfaction and stability while making positive changes in their lives. Emphasis is placed on how the application of yoga in conjunction with treatment can accelerate the rehabilitative process.

摘要:
This article reports results of a study designed to determine differences among three populations: college-aged children of alcoholics seeking treatment; college-aged children of alcoholics not seeking treatment; and a control group of college-aged non-children of alcoholics. Further, outcome data was gathered with regard to the children of alcoholics treatment groups populated by subjects of this study. Significant differences were determined among the three groups studied, and support was determined for the therapeutic value of group treatment with children of alcoholics.

摘要:
Children of Alcoholics (COAs) present unique challenges to treatment that result from the misleading image they project to the world and to themselves. They become trapped by the very illusion they create of a strength and capability that does not permit vulnerability, paradox, deficit or internal inconsistency. Clinical examples will trace this illusion through various facets of the adult COAs presentation to the world and examine implications for treatment.

摘要:
Treatment outcome for hospitalized alcoholics was assessed two years after their first hospitalization for alcholism. Results indicated hospitalization to have been an effective mode of treatment in terms of relapse to the hospital, patient's perception of treatment, and patient's functioning at home and at work. Eighty-seven percent of the patients did not relapse during the first six months; 79% did not relapse after one year; 75% did not relapse after 18 months; and 72% did not relapse two years after hospitaliztion. Nearly three-fourths of the patients indicated that their lives had improved since hospitalization.

摘要:
Competence, ethical, and strategic issues with regard to the cooperation of substance abuse counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists were reviewed. The uneasy interprofessional past may be giving way to mandated cooperation, specialized training, and elaboration and clarification of issues and procedures attempting the quality of care to substance users. Specific recommendations to substance abuse counselors wishing to foster cooperation are forwarded and psychologists and psychiatrists are reminded of the positions of their professional associations in this regard.
