AbstractThe behavior of several XOn−4ions and molecules with respect to the corrosion of iron and steel was studied. The results support the view that a competitive adsorption of the effective inhibitors is involved in their action, and that their specificity derives from an internal difference other than precipitating power and ionic charge or configuration. It is proposed that this specificity depends upon a difference in the polarity of the X‐O bonds, such that those particles in which the polarity and the valence of X are high exert an effective electrostatic polarization in the substrate. It was shown that the film formed on iron in an aerated inhibitor exhibits the Flade potential during activation by addition of an indifferent electrolyte. An electrode process corresponding to the Flade potential is suggested. The passivation process is discussed from the point of view of the relative rates of reduction of protons and oxygen, respectively, and the possible effect of electrostatic polarization upon these rates.Evidence is presented for considering the XOn−4particles to differ among themselves in the degree of polarity of the X‐O bonds. It is shown that covalently and ionically bonded structures lead to very different electrostatic fields near the surface on which they are adsorbed, and the field of the polar particles is discussed with respect to its possible relation to inhibition and other phenomena dependent upon the kinetics of charged‐particle transfer at i

AbstractThree cases of the inactivation of a metal by small amounts of a foreign metal originally present as a cation in solution are cited: the inactivation of iron by Sn(II) and Pb(II) ions in boiling 0.2 M citric acid; the inactivation of nickel by Cu(II) ions in boiling 2 M HC1; and the inactivation of titanium in boiling 2 M HC1 by the Group VIII metals, rhodium, ruthenium, palladium, iridium, osmium, and platinum. Experiments on the activation of aluminum, copper, iron, nickel, silver, tin, and zinc in boiling acids by the Group VIII metals are also described. The foreign metal is considered to exert its influence on the activity of the corroding metal only after it is reduced to the metallic state at the surface. It is suggested that the corrosion rate which results is controlled by the type of electron transfer which occurs between the two kinds of metal atoms at the solution‐metal interfac

AbstractA study of the reactions of chromate with iron has been made. The amount of chromium in the passivating film has been measured using radio‐active chromium and by chemical analysis. The surface of the iron after exposure to chromate was examined by auto‐radiography, electron diffraction and electron microscopy. It was concluded that passivity of iron in chromate solutions is caused by the formation of an oxide film about 100 Å thick containing about 25% Cr2O3and 75% γ

AbstractPassivity in the transition metal alloys occurs at specific critical compositions which appear to be related tod‐electron vacancies in the component metals and their tendency to fill with electrons. Thedvacancies, measured in part by the magnetic saturation moment, favor formation of strongly chemisorbed surface films, e. g. oxygen, which confer increased resistance to corrosion or passivity by satisfying metal surface affinities. A metal that is characteristically passive, e. g. Cr, in general forms a stronger metaladsorbed oxygen bond, as measured by free energy of adsorption, than a metal characteristically less passive, e. g. Fe. Vacancies in thedband of a strongly passive metal, called the acceptor, tend to fill with electrons either from alloyed atoms that form weakerd‐electron bonds (the donor) or from adsorbed or interstitial hydrogen. Alloys resemble passive and chemical‐resistant properties of the acceptor component so long as thedband of the acceptor is unfilled, but shift to properties more like the donor when thedband is filled. Thedband is just full at the critical composition. Critical compositions are calculated for Ni‐Cu, Cr‐Fe, Ni‐Fe, Co‐Fe, Mo‐Ni and Cr‐Ni alloys which agree reasonably well with observation. The effect of environment is to shift the critical composition to higher percentages of acceptor metal if electrons are donated, for example by adsorbed or interstitial hydrogen. The value is shifted in the opposite direction if the adsorbate is strongly electron absorbing (oxidizing). Accordingly, the critical composition for Cr‐Fe alloys lies at 15% Cr or higher in presence of interstitial or adsorbed hydrogen, at 12% Cr in aerated aqueous media nearpH 7, and at 4 to 6% Cr in HNO3depending on the acid concentration. This shift is accounted for by donation to thedband of 0.15 electron per metal atom by H, and by increased transfer of 0.4 to 0.6 electron to adsorbed HNO3respectively.Chloride ions destroy passivity by competing with dissolved oxygen or other passivators for adsorption sites on the metal surface. Once adsorbed, chlorides appear to increase the exchange current for many metal‐metal ion equilibria, and thereby decrease anodic overvoltage for dissolution of the metal. Criticism of the theory by

AbstractPassivity behavior in austenitic stainless steel has been studied both with bulk metal samples and by characterization of surface oxide films stripped from the stainless steel in various states of passivity. Electrochemical measurements of (1) break‐through potentials, (2) resistance to pit initiation and (3) solution potential change with time provide a direct indication of the passivity state and point to the presence and influence of surface films in the control of passivity and corrosion behavior.Protective surface films have been isolated and characterized with respect to structure and chemical composition. Microgravimetric techniques have been applied to the determination of the kinetics of formation of oxide films on activated stainless steel surfaces. The influence of adsorption on the over‐all process of film formation has been carefully considered on the basis of the kinetic data. A concept for the state of passivity of stainless steel is presented on the basis of data on gas adsorption, film properties and alloy composit

AbstractThe mechanism by which 18 Cr ‐ 8 Ni stainless steel becomes passive after the sulfuric acid pickle ‐ air exposure treatment is probably one of oxidation. The protective film is most likely an amorphous hydrous oxide. Oxygen is picked up slowly at room temperature on pickled surfaces of Type 304 stainless steel whether outgassed or reduced at 400 °C in a hydrogen atmosphere. The quantity of oxygen required for saturation is less than half the amount necessary to produce a molecular monolayer in both cases. Oxide film thickening is a logical reason for this irreversible sorption of ox
