IN THE 1980s, Canada's National Design Council and Design Canada were disbanded. Jacques Giard explains why and suggests future options, none of which foresee the return of these institutions. Rather, Giard focuses on the need to understand design as process. He recommends designers take control of their own destiny, in part by making significant changes in education, including greater emphasis on interdisciplinary training, the team approach to project development, and rigorous academic program reviews.
