摘要:
FromAugust 1938 until July 1940 I was stationed at Mwinilunga in the extreme north‐west corner of Northern Rhodesia. I propose in due course to give a full account of the ornithology of that area when I have worked out the systematic results of the collection which I made there. In the meantime I am taking this opportunity to record some of the field observation

摘要:
As in my previous notes (Ibis, 1942, pp. 83–90), the information on distribution and breeding is supplementary to that given in Winterbottom's ‘Check List of the Birds of Northern Rhodesia’. My 1941 notes in ‘The Ibis’ (I) dealt with a wider area, but these are restricted to the Chambeshi River area in the Northern Province and to the upper Luangwa River area in the Northern and Eastern

摘要:
TheSpectacled Warbler is the characteristic small bird of theSalicorniaareas of the Camargue, where the following notes on early breeding behaviour were made in April 1937 and 1938. Its status in this region was for some time in doubt (1), but the confusion between it and the Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undataBodd.) has now been without possible question cleared up by the late Rev. F. C. R. Jourdain (2), and the observations of recent visitors have thoroughly confirmed this opinion(3), (4).

摘要:
Summary.1A summary of breeding records for Kenya Colony, Uganda, Tanganyika Territory and Italian Somaliland is given in the following table.2The table shows that the main breeding area is the great lowland plain that stretches from the Tana River north‐eastwards into Italian Somaliland. The actual nesting quarters seem to centre around the lower middle courses of two rivers—the Tana and the Juba—and the finish of a third—the Waso. A fourth river, the Webi Shebelli, deserves investigation.3The breeding season over the whole of this area begins in October‐November (i. e., during the short rains). Conversely, the scanty records from the highlands of Kenya Colony and Uganda, and from the semi‐high country of Tanganyika Territory, show that the season here may begin in July, at the end of the long rains.4Most colonies are beside rivers, but others are several miles from water.5Either tall forest trees or thorn acacias are chosen. With forest trees, birds normally build in the highest branches, but lower forks are sometimes employed. With acacias it is the flat tops that are utilized.6A clutch of three eggs, now in the Coryndon Museum, Nairobi, measures 76·5–71 × 53·5–50 mm.7Either one or two young are normally reared. The plumages of a half‐grown nestling and of a newly‐fledged juvenile are described, possi

摘要:
Ornithologyhas suffered a grievous loss by the death of Rear‐Admiral Hubert Lynes, which occurred after a short illness at a Naval Hospital in Wales on 10 November, 1942, a few days before his sixty‐eighth birthday. Those who knew him will remember him not alone for his talents and achievements, but as a man of exceptional character and as an ever faithful friend and good compan
