摘要:
&NA;In this article, communicative participation is developed as a unit of analysis for gaining information about children's communication in everyday contexts. A construct is proposed that consists of five interrelated layers: lifeworld participation, participant structure, participant stance, participant accommodation, and participant resources. Although each of these five dimensions can be pulled apart for the sake of analysis, their impact becomes evident when viewed in relation to each other as they constitute the greater communicative context. Given that communication is central to how people go about building their social worlds, managing their lives, and constructing their identities, communicative participation is a relevant framework for documenting the outcomes of language intervention.

摘要:
&NA;A clinical application of assessment methods adapted from qualitative research is described. Specifically, data were collected via ethnographic interviewing and journal writing before, during, and after intervention in a case of adult aphasia. The data were categorized to provide insight into contexts of communication, social relationships, and feelings about life with aphasia. By analyzing the reports of the client and significant others over the course of treatment, changes in social participation and psychosocial well‐being were documented. These descriptive data provided a socially valid and consumer focused method of tracking outcome in this case.

摘要:
&NA;As the profession of speech‐language pathology continues to grow, it proliferates clinical approaches. Recent additions have been to focus on a client's life participation, to involve clients in clinical decision making, and to develop more culturally sensitive practices. In this article, we argue that these additions should not be seen as therapeutic alternatives or in competition with impairment‐oriented approaches. Rather, we see the additions as comprising different strands of a complex therapeutic process. The evaluation question is not what approach to use to reduce our clients' impairment, but rather which approaches will best lead clients toward attaining their life goals. We propose that the clients' progression toward life goals be the standard used to evaluate the whole course of therapy. We illustrate this holistic, life goals approach to evaluation through clinical case examples.

摘要:
&NA;This article addresses outcome measures for social communication problems exhibited by school‐age children. General guidelines for selecting outcome measures are provided. Specific outcome measures are discussed relative to (1) a model for viewing abilities that are necessary for social communication and (2) a framework for sampling these abilities across four different contexts. A case example provides an application of outcome measures to monitoring change.

摘要:
&NA;The central tenet of this article is to urge a shift in thinking about intervention approaches to include sociocultural activities. The sociocultural approach is described as a process that is embedded in social and cultural activity, and is an approach to rethinking and redefining best practices for intervention. As one application to intervention, this framework examines the transfer of responsibility in cultural activities in three major areas: apprenticeship and intervention, intervention and qualitative documentation of intervention in cultural activities, and the efficacy of apprenticeship in clinical intervention approaches. The data in this chapter support the integration of sociocultural learning and apprenticeship in the current paradigm of intervention practices. Descriptions of intervention practices as development in context, relating intervention practices to everyday routine activities, and describing intervention practices as apprenticeships are discussed.
