摘要:
This article reviews factors that have been shown to influence the development of long-term memory. Developmental differences have been found in encoding, storage, retrieval, and reporting phases of memory. These phases are shown to be highly interrelated with each other and with prior knowledge, level of language development, and contextual demands. A discovery process is described that can be used to determine the degree to which children's long-term memories vary across recall content and contexts. The authors also detail a method for determining which memory facilitation strategies are the most effective for a given child.

摘要:
Many of the narratives told by children are mapped onto frameworks carried in long-term memory. Scripts, derived from experience with events, and story frameworks, derived from listening to or reading stories, serve to support recall and retrieval of information and to structure narratives incorporating the information. Assessment can reveal (1) whether a child has the necessary experience to form a relevant framework, (2) whether the child can use the framework to structure a nonverbal narrative (through use of pictures or actions), and (3) whether the child can use the framework to structure a verbal narrative. Explanations for children's failures to use narrative frameworks can serve to focus appropriate intervention.

摘要:
Two metacognitive strategies, ARROW and BRIDGE, are presented that can be taught to students to help them manage the long-term memory demands of middle school and high school curricula. Learning to use metacognitive strategies is not enough, however. To be successful, students must act strategically. That is, they should be able to modify their strategies to meet the needs of different situations. Factors underlying strategic actions are discussed, and a “metastrategy” is presented that is designed to facilitate the development of strategic problem solving.

摘要:
Treatment of memory disorders in traumatic brain injury has benefited from advances in knowledge of neural systems in differentiating sources of memory deficits. Replacing the previously narrow focus on reduction of impairment, effective assessment and treatment planning should be based on differentiation of primary cognitive impairment sources and treatment designed to utilize effective disability-oriented methods. Disability reduction treatment approaches include specific training in strategies for rehearsal and encoding and increased utilization of a wide variety of external aids.

摘要:
An important defining feature of dementia is memory impairment, a progressive deficit that also affects patients' ability to use and comprehend language. In this article, the memory deficits associated with the dementia syndromes of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Lewy body disease are outlined and related to the language impairments that have been observed in patients with these disorders. Assessment techniques are described, including commonly used individual tests and test batteries that assess the memory and language of dementia patients. Based on the pattern of spared and impaired memory functions, specific strategies for facilitating language in dementia patients are proposed.
