摘要:
This article reviews current trends in the study of children with specific language impairment (SLI). SLI is defined as significant limitation in language ability in the absence of accompanying hearing impairment, low nonverbal intelligence, or neurological damage. Our understanding of SLI is as dynamic as the disorder itself and new information often challenges current clinical practices. Four areas of current research are highlighted to draw attention to new evidence that provides an opportunity for reconsideration of current clinical practice: (1) heterogeneity in the group of children identified with SLI, (2) diagnostic criteria used to identify SLI, (3) auditory processing, and (4) short-term memory.

摘要:
Language specialists, particularly speech-language pathologists, have been largely invested in serving the needs of individuals with oral speech-language disorders. The basis for this investment is explored through a review of the growth of the profession in the 20th century. Research over the past 25 years has led researchers to define an oracy to literacy continuum in post-industrial societies. This shifting paradigm presents new opportunities for those who serve individuals with language learning disabilities (LLD). Past, present, and future changes in roles and responsibilities are explored at the cusp of the millennium.

摘要:
The ability to understand and create stories and explanations plays an important role in the acquisition of literacy. This article describes how clinicians can use an assessment process known as Dynamic Assessment to evaluate children's narrative and expository discourse abilities. These assessment procedures help speech-language pathologists better describe the language learning potential of children who are referred for language assessment, and they yield information that is useful for determining whether children present a language difference or a language disorder. We also demonstrate how Dynamic Assessment provides critical information for planning language intervention.

摘要:
The National Research Council report, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children, reviews research on early reading and recommends prevention strategies and optimal interventions for reading difficulties. Since speech-language pathologists often treat children whose language problems co-occur with reading difficulties, they can help inform parents and teachers about the relation between language and literacy difficulties, and help coordinate interventions across these two areas. We summarize the NRC's conclusions concerning normal reading development and key developmental milestones in the various domains relevant to reading success (phonological awareness, letter identification, the alphabetic principle, automatic word recognition, comprehension strategies).

摘要:
This article presents the premise that the broad population of children classified as chronically ill (CI) is at risk for psychoeducational and language-learning disorders as comorbid conditions and sequelae. The article's thesis is that language-learning disorders are associated with many chronic illnesses and with iatrogenesis. An emphasis for the millennium will be on exploring the prevalence of communication disorders as comorbid conditions and sequelae to a broadened spectrum of health events. Changed professional roles in unusual work settings will be one consequence of this broadened emphasis.
