摘要:
This article describes the evolution of a transdisciplinary team and its approach to the assessment of infants and toddlers identified as at-risk for developmental delay. The authors identify prenatal and perinatal conditions that result in an infant being considered at-risk. The assessment process is outlined and includes information regarding the various instruments utilized in assessing the cognitive, language, and motor development of infants and toddlers. Obstacles encountered with families that would prevent them from participating in this follow-up program are described, as well as methods found to be effective in alleviating these obstacles and increasing participation in the follow-up clinic.

摘要:
Studies of the language developmental outcomes of prematurity over the last 30 years have reported contradictory results. Methodological differences that may account for some of these inconsistencies are reviewed. Frequently occurring perinatal risk factors are discussed and two areas of research warranting further attention—small-for-gestational-age infants and language and language-related skills in older children—are highlighted. Currently, being born too young, too small, or both represent risk factors for language development that increase in that order and are sufficient to warrant language monitoring.

摘要:
This article examines the relationship and predictive power of the Early Language Milestone Scale-2 (ELM-2) and the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II (BSID-II). Both scales were administered to 90 infants who were referred to a neonatal developmental follow-up clinic due to prematurity and low birth weight, physical conditions that placed them at risk for developmental delay, or both. Results of the ELM-2 correlated with BSID-II scores of infants 12 months of age. Implications are discussed regarding use of the ELM-2 for infants and toddlers who are not considered at risk.

摘要:
Transdisciplinary teaming is a useful means of assisting families of children with special needs and can be adapted specifically to addressing the complex problems of children with feeding disorders. In this article, a review of the principals of the transdisciplinary team approach is presented, followed by a description of the pediatric feeding team at the University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital. Case studies are provided for illustrative purposes, followed by a discussion of the advantages and challenges that result from using a transdisciplinary team in the evaluation and treatment of feeding disorders.

摘要:
It is a continual challenge for clinical audiologists to obtain valid and reliable information concerning the auditory sensitivity and auditory processing abilities of young children, especially those with language disorders. The majority of the tests that are available for use with young children do not provide much information regarding the problems they are likely to encounter in typical communication situations. This paper describes a new “class” of auditory tests designed to evaluate the ability of young children to (1) detect commonly encountered sounds, (2) localize sound sources, and (3) understand speech in noise. These tests appear to be sensitive to the effects of auditory pathology and to the normal development of auditory processing skills.

摘要:
Although including families as key decision makers on early intervention teams is considered best practice, specific information on how to accomplish this goal is still needed in the speech-language pathology literature. A four-phase process for forming therapeutic alliances with families is outlined, with specific strategies included. Methods from the family therapy literature form the basis for this treatment approach and are superimposed onto speech-language therapy techniques. Adaptations to meet the unique needs of young children with communication difficulties and their families have been made. Case study dialogues, based on actual conversations, are used to illustrate the treatment process.
