摘要:
This article examines principles of information processing and the ways in which they can both facilitate and interfere with the language comprehension and production performance of children with language impairment. The clinical implications of these notions for assessment and intervention with children are discussed.

摘要:
This article considers how information regarding processing limitations in children with specific language impairment (SLI) might be extended to assist in early identification of toddlers at risk for language disorder. A brief review of the evidence for processing capacity limitations in SLI is provided, along with results from longitudinal studies of toddlers with late onset of language development. Preliminary findings are presented from an ongoing investigation of early lexical processing for 15 late talking toddlers and 15 controls whose performance was assessed on a novel word learning task. Assessment implications of a processing based account of language impairment are discussed.

摘要:
This article explores evidence related to the idea that children with language impairments present co-occurring limitations in data-driven and conceptually driven processing. Data-driven processing (also referred to as bottom-up processing) concerns the way auditory and visual information is received. Conceptually driven processing (also referred to as top-down processing) concerns the way higher-order thinking influences performance. Together, data-driven and conceptually driven processing limitations contribute to a heightened sensitivity to increasing task demands in children with language impairments. We present assessment and intervention suggestions that pertain to these difficulties.

摘要:
Many children with language impairment have slower response times to complete several types of linguistic and nonlinguistic tasks than other children of the same chronological age. This article compares two views of the slower response time, that the slowing is due to difficulty with particular cognitive processes and that the slowing is due to a general cognitive processing limitation that is a more pervasive and elemental aspect of the cognitive architecture. Clinical implications of the distinction between process-specific and general slowing are discussed.

摘要:
Many children with specific language impairment (SLI) exhibit co-occurring deficits in information processing and spokenlanguage comprehension. While it has been assumed that the language comprehension problems of these children are related, at least in part, to poor processing, relatively little is known aboutsuch a relation. In this article we examine several sub-constructs of information processing and their potential association withthe poorer language comprehension of children with SLI. We arguethat some of the language comprehension problems of children with SLI are related to certain information processing inefficiencies. Techniques for both language assessment and intervention are offered.
