摘要:
John Dixon'sGrowth Through Englishwas a seminal text in the development of NATE and a major influence on a whole generation of teachers. In his new bookA Schooling in English2, to be published later this year, he traces some of the historical developments which led up to that point, a series of ideological and institutional struggles that are still continuing. We are pleased to publish here a brief synopsis, written for the UEA Language and Literacy Convention in April, together with a review of the book itself.

摘要:
Assiduous readers ofEnglish for Ages 5 to 16may remember that, in their introductory section, Professor Cox's Working Group identify five “views” of the role of English in the curriculum: “cultural heritage”, “personal growth”, “cultural analysis”, “adult needs”, and “cross‐curricular”. In this article, Jay Snow discusses these views, relating them to the history of English and to its pot

摘要:
The unity of “unitary” English, subsuming “language” and “literature”, has always been a central tenet of NATE thinking and a basic assumption of most progressive practice, and is now enshrined in the National Curriculum1. In this article, however, Chris Davies makes the scandalous proposal that the time has come when “language” and “literature”, radically transformed, would

摘要:
The apparent contradictions between different strands of conservative thinking on education have been particularly clear recently in relation to 16–19 English, where a reactionary insistence on the “gold standard” of traditional A Level English Literature, and traditional literary study in general, sits uncomfortably alongside an aggressive promotion of vocationalist modernisation. This article discusses the connections between the two, and offers an example of a practical alternative to

摘要:
Although it is commonplace to recommend the serious study of “media texts” alongside “literary” ones, it is usually assumed that traditional attitudes to the value and values of “literature” can remain largely unaffected by this. In this article, however, Nick Peim demonstrates that setting Marvell alongside Madonna actually raises some radical political and pedagogical i

摘要:
The media debate about Shakespeare sparked off by Prince Charles's speech earlier this year has already been referred to in several articles in this edition. Although all the media comment agreed that it is of paramount importance that students study Shakespeare, there was hardly any consideration of what such study might involve, beyond the development of a reverential “acquaintanceship”. In this article, Sean McEvoy discusses this blank reverence and proposes a more theoretically‐informed, politically‐aware p
