摘要:
AbstractThis article seeks to formulate a coherent view of English which is based on an analysis of pupils' experience of language in its social and cultural setting. It is argued that the revised National Curriculum, although influenced by conservative ideologies, has no fundamental rationale underpinning its prescriptions. We make the case that a concept of critical literacy, which would be applicable to all texts, should constitute the foundation of the subject.

摘要:
AbstractThis article is drawn from a report produced for Suffolk schools concerning the factors that seem to underlie success at A level English Literature by able students. The report followed a small‐scale survey in six schools which regularly do well in the proportion of high grades achieved, conducted as part of the ongoing monitoring of teaching and learning in English in the county. Through lesson observation, interview and the scrutiny of written work, a large number of possible factors explaining the success of these departments were considered. The factors of greatest significance included the subject expertise and commitment of staff, the balance of teaching methods used and pupils' experience of a challenging English curriculum at KS4. The report's conclusions and recommendations are of general interest to English departments and INSET providers nationall

摘要:
AbstractNavdeep is a six‐year‐old storyteller whose stories give insights into his *iwareness of ‘story’ in terms of his ‘East‐West’ heritage and his language development. Using his story ‘The Witch and the Gang’, I have analysed his narrative competences. Salman Rushdie is another ‘East‐West’ storyteller, and I have usedHaroun and the Sea of Storiesto place Navdeep's storying in both a cultural a

摘要:
AbstractStorytelling is one of the oldest forms of education. The National Oracy Project and the National Curriculum's emphasis on Speaking and Listening have given fresh relevance to this ancient practice. Meanwhile, storytelling as an art form is experiencing a revival in Britain. This article reports on the views of storytellers on children's work with stories, and offers many ideas to teachers on effective ways to tap into the oral tradition.
