摘要:
The shape of the twenty-first-century company is becoming clear. It will be organized around processes rather than functions. Managers will coach and design rather than supervise and control. Employees will be process performers rather than task workers, with a broad understanding of their process and their company. The company itself will be a dynamic, flexible organization filled with entrepreneurial zeal and focused sharply on customer needs.1

摘要:
The Internet offers unique communication opportunities that can be used advantageously by nurse administrators. The Internet supports electronic mail, file transfer protocol, telnet, Gopher, and World Wide Web protocols. Examples of nursing administration resources for each protocol are given. Issues involving the Internet include quality of the resource, confidentiality and privacy, taking advantage of the vision and support of nurse executives, licensure, and reimbursement.

摘要:
Home health nurse visit and care coordination time were compared between Medicare patients enrolled in an health maintenance organization (HMO) and in the traditional Medicare fee-for-service program. In-home nurse visit time did not differ for the two groups. Coordination time per episode of care was approximately 40 minutes longer for an HMO patient. When home health administrators develop discounted visit rates for HMO contracts, they must include the extra coordination time in the rates.

摘要:
Responding to an enlarged span of control and an ever changing health care environment, the author describes the implementation of a unit-based shared governance model. Through study, literature review, and team consensus, a new management style emerged. Using Rosabeth Kanter's framework for work effectiveness, the unit governance structure was transformed. The process, progress, and outcomes are described, analyzed, and celebrated.

摘要:
The importance of the nurse manager for both quality patient care and organizational effectiveness seems indisputable. With decentralized decision-making, the role of the nurse manager has expanded in both scope and accountability. In this two-part article, role implementation of the nurse manager and associated learning needs are described. This article focuses on interpreting significant incidents related to role implementation in nurse manager's practice. It also shows how the authors used the Manager as Developer Model for organizing and understanding some of the data. Part 2 (April 1997) will describe and interpret significant incidents related to nurse managers' ongoing learning needs.

摘要:
The leadership and commitment of nursing administrators play a pivotal role in minimizing the use of restraints and maintaining a restraint-free environment. This article describes the role of nursing administrators in reducing the use of physical restraints as part of a 2-year, national nursing home restraint-reduction project. It reviews important information about restraint-free care, the benefits of restraint-free care, and strategies to reduce the use of restraints in nursing homes, much of which is applicable to settings other than nursing homes."They'll fall and hurt themselves if we don't restrain them.""We'll get sued if they're not restrained and hurt themselves.""It'll cost too much.""You don't understand how difficult our families are."- Nursing home administrators talking about why they have high rates of restraint use.
