摘要:
This article highlights one practical method—ethics rounds—for establishing a climate in which nurses can freely reason through ethical dilemmas they confront in practice. The author discusses formats for ethics rounds and their guiding principles. These, together with her background discussion of ethical principles, can assist nursing administrators in facilitating ethics rounds that meet their obligations to support staff in dealing with ethical dilemmas.

摘要:
Psychiatric liaison nurses can be effective in helping staff deliver better care, if they are able to establish credibility with staff nurses and others, and have the support of key persons in the hospital system. These authors clarify the nursing administrator's role in facilitating the successful functioning of the psychiatric liaison nurse. Their practical questions and considerations concerning expectations, job parameters, and planning for entry into the system will help nursing administrators and liaison nurses ensure that staff and patients realize the potential benefits of this specialist role.

摘要:
Part of functioning well as a nurse executive is group activity, usuah'y problem solving or goal setting. The frustrating aspect to this is dealing with others whose reactions may be so different from your own that your very thought processes seem to be opposed. Nugent suggests that this indeed may be true. He argues that there are two fundamentally different modes of thought-the rational and the intuitive-and that, unless grouppartic-ipants clearly understand this, severe and unnecessary obstacles may interfere with organizationaleffectiveness. In this article Nugent defines the characteristics of each of these modes, and he suggests ways in which the nurse administrator can use this understanding so that each may balance the other. The result will be an enriched organization, with participants better able to appreciate and use different but complementary perspectives.

摘要:
The intrinsic satisfaction staff members gain from their jobs is an important motivational factor. Moreover, it greatly influences an institution's job retention rate. These authors believe that, in many cases, job enrichment can increase the potential for work satisfaction and help administrators attract and keep a high-quality nursing staff. In this article, the authors discuss their examination of clinical nursing jobs in various areas of one hospital and compare them by examining their motivational characteristics. The study identifies the clinical nursing jobs that should be enriched to increase their motivational potential. This article will help administrators devise a strategy for job enrichment in particular specialties where they will have the greatest positive effects.
