摘要:
Nursing administrators are debating the desirable mix of professional (RN) and paraprofessional (LPN) nursing staff under the prospective payment system (DRGs). The staffing mix reflects the cost and quality of nursing care provided by an acute care hospital. Based on a reliable and valid acuity/care plan system, standards of care and nursing diagnoses, several DRGs were analyzed on an eight-bed medical/surgical intensive care unit with regard to intensity of care and staffing mix. This study showed nursing administrators that the staffing mix on an intensive care unit varies according to the acuity/care plan rather than DRGs or nursing diagnoses.

摘要:
Planned, skillful use of public relations in marketing nursing services can facilitate achievement of the nursing organization's goals and objectives. The local community, news media, bankers, local politicians, government officials, and social action groups all can take an active or reactive interest in nursing's activities. Public relations can provide an effective approach for achieving optimal results within the political and economic constraints of the current marketplace.

摘要:
Role expectations among staff nurses in hospitals have been linked to turnover and attrition from the profession and may be associated with phenomena such as absenteeism and burnout. A study was conducted in eight Midwestern hospitals to obtain an empirically based model of staff nurse role conception. Seven major components of the construct were identified, which included 12 different dimensions. Data from the study provided helpful information for nurse administrators in understanding the dynamics of the hospital work environment for staff nurses. Potential sources of role conflict are discussed.

摘要:
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is a generally untapped resource for the nurse executive. Although seen as an asset, the CNS may be considered an expensive and nonessential part of the department of nursing. The role is threatened with extinction not only because it is seen as dispensable in a time of cost restraint, but also because of problems in role implementation. We believe the CNS role is vital to the advancement of nursing practice and that the impact of the CNS on nursing practice has not reached its full potential. This paper summarizes the major problems inhibiting role development in the hospital setting and suggests solutions to the nurse executive for maximizing the role potential of the CNS.
