摘要:
Applying type theory is a relatively inexpensive way for managers to increase effectiveness by emphasizing the qualitative issues in organizations. The author describes managerial and organizational uses of C.G. Jung's theory of psychological type, as operationalized in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI is useful not only in identifying individual preferences, but also in developing effective managerial and working terms. Knowledge of one's own type and the type of others can help managers motivate others, maximize human resources, persuade others, and gain cooperation. An article in the January 1989 issue ofJONAdiscusses the author's use of the MBTI to assess decision-making styles and the compatibility of hospital chief nursing officers and executive officers.

摘要:
Nurse administrators are in a key position to develop strategies to deter drug abuse by their staff. This two-part series of articles discusses the development of a prevention program. This first article describes risk factors associated with initial and continuing drug use by nurses. The second article (January 1989) will present an educational program based on this risk factors and suggest ways to provide staff with support.

摘要:
Prospective payment has created a desire for improved internal operating efficiency by nurse executives and hospital administrators. Identifying nursing costs is one step in obtaining those efficiencies. Improved nursing cost allocation methods have been developed but these systems are costly to implement.1Finding a low cost alternative to such systems would be valuable. The authors present direct comparisons of conventional daily and acuity based nursing labor costs allocation systems. Consistent with the findings of others, they demonstrate substantial differences between these methods. There is a high correlation of nursing labor costs with the patient's ancillary costs. However, the correlation is not sufficiently strong to use as a proxy for nursing costs. Consequently, nurse executives should strive to implement nursing cost allocation systems.

摘要:
Seeking ways to produce new products, processes, and programs that would result in cost savings or increased revenue for nursing services and the institution, as well as attracting and retaining bright, creative nursing employees, the authors developed a pilot program to allow intrapreneurs to “run with” their ideas. The authors discuss the mechanics of their program development, implementation, and evaluation as well as examples of innovative projects under development by nursing employees.

摘要:
The authors examine the vital role nursing professionals have played in the successful implementation of a sophisticated computer system at a regional medical center in the midwest. From preselection analysis through training and implementation, nurses have assumed primary responsibility for managing the multifaceted adaptation and installation of a comprehensive array of patient care functions. This experience can serve as an invaluable example of the relationship between information management, patient management, cost management, and quality enhancement in the hospital setting.
