摘要:
Planning for purchase, intplementation, and use of an automated hospital information system is critical to its success. The planning process involves assessing needs, evaluating alternatives, selecting a system, and implementation support. Although an evaluation of costs and benefits of alternative sysients is useful in planning for and selecting a system, the assessnient can be very coniplex, and the assuniptiorts used in the analysis are critical. Most benefits of autoniatedsystems are the result of intprovedtinieliness, accuracy, and access to inforniation, and these are difficult to value in dollars.

摘要:
In the April 1983 issue of JONA, the authors identified four major causes and the costs of promotion trauma. Nursing administrators can both minimize this trauma and its unnecessary cost by building awareness of the transition process, clarifying roles and expectations, and attending to the promoted employee's needs by developing a systematic program of manager care. Such support and encouragement can help promotees achieve the expected levels of competency in a shorter period of time, with less personal anguish. This article will help nursing administrators to develop a concept of manager care buttressed with programs for orientation of new managers, skills of mentoring, and systems of monitoring.

摘要:
Estimating outpatient nursing workload on the basis of visit volume loses validity as utilization of services by patients with complex nursing needs increases. In response to this challenge, nursing administrators at all levels must maintain an awareness of new methods to measure and predict outpatient nursing workload. Accurate quantification of the workload is a valuable tool in justifying costs, particularly in the face of health care regulation, and in developing billing systems that reflect actual nursing practice. Using the concept of relative value units (RVU), the authors describe a nursing workload measurement system developed in the outpatient department of a regional cancer center.

摘要:
Nursing administrators are well aware of the negative impact of nursing turnover on the quality of nursing care and the productivity of a nursing department. They are equally aware of the high cost of continually recruiting and orienting new nursing staff. Yet finding a solution to the problem of turnover has proved very difficult. This article proposes the use of networking as a method of retaining nursing staff. A conceptual design is offered that focuses on communication and collaboration. This networking plan relies on aspects of the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation—to reach its goal: retention of high-quality nursing staff.

摘要:
The adniinistrative role in both nursing service and education demands many political interfaces that eticonipass conflicts, negotiations, power struggles and on-going conipetition for scarce resources. However, the skill required to deal effectively with those situations is a function of both career and organizational experiences. The niodelpresented in this article is intended to provide nurse administrators with a framework for politically astute planning and decision makitig and avoidance of judgment faux pas.

摘要:
Recent economic changes have had a substantial impact on health care. For nursing to survive, nurse administrators must develop strategies based on economic theories and realities. Reaganomics is based on many of Milton Friedman's theories and frameworks. This article explores these theories as they apply to future nursing opportunities. As a nurse administrator you feel the economic crunch—now it's time to base your strategies on these realities.
