摘要:
Professionalization is a common theme in nursing. As this process progresses, the utility of more traditional methods and procedures will continue to come under scrutiny. The authors describe the evolution of a system of staff governance on one nursing unit in a large urban medical center. Factors contributing to the decision to abolish line positions on the unit are discussed, as are the dilemmas the staff faced in undertaking management of the unit.

摘要:
Nurse executives have all felt the negative impact of stress and burnout in their organizations. As data emerge supporting the benefits of burnout and stress intervention programs in the workplace, nurse executives are in a unique position to foster development of organizational approaches to manage or prevent burnout. This article will describe a specific nurse administration generated antiburnout program applicable to health care organizations.

摘要:
An innovative program in a small hospital can greatly enhance quality of patient care and nurse satisfaction at nominal cost. A custom-designed nurse specialist program was developed successfully by the nursing department at a 49-bed hospital and can easily be adapted to other rural facilities with similar needs.

摘要:
In the current environment of Diagnosis Related Groups and competition for the health care market share, there is a significant increase of vice-president of medical affairs or medical director positions on the hospital management team. This partnership is seen as vital for the survival of private practice physicians and hospitals. What does the addition of this role mean to the nursing administrator? What is the likelihood of a confusion of responsibilities between the vice-president of nursing and the vice-president of medical affairs or medical director? What involvement should the vice-president of nursing have in the vice-president of medical affairs or medical director's job description? These are some of the questions discussed in this article.

摘要:
A must for every nurse administrator is a book by Robert L. Veninga entitledThe Human Side of Health Administration. Veninga has synthesized a wealth of information in the fields of management, communication, and organizational behavior that have particular relevance to health care delivery systems and, more specifically, direct application to the actual work that nursing, hospital, and public health administrators undertake. Each chapter identifies several administrative concepts, explains the rationale of each, and then demonstrates how these concepts apply to the real-world work of human service administration. From the book's chapter on “Competency: Developing Productive Committees” comes this excerpt on the benefits and costs of group meetings. It will help you make your meetings as productive and effective as possible.
