Summary.Rare reports of endodontic therapy in fused permanet molars appear in the literature, and these indicate the complexity of such cases. Three further cases are reported in this paper, establishing a conclusion of clinical value; all the root canals should be expected to emerge from one chamber, comprising one root canal system. This finding dismisses any attempts of ‘partial’ therapy in cases of posterior fusion. The variability in root canal systems in fused teeth makes it difficult to predict their configuration. Summary.Three types of irrigant, 2.6 per cent sodium hypochlorite, water and Solvidont were compared for their ability to remove debris during root canal preparation with ultrasonically operated K files. Twenty‐seven freshly extracted human teeth were divided into three groups, and each group prepared using one of the irrigants. The teeth were sectioned longitudinally, stained and photographed for assessment by a ranking system. Canals prepared with sodium hypochlorite were found to have significantly less debris remaining than those prepared with water or Solvidont. Summary.Sixty human premolar and canine teeth were used in this study. Class V cavities were prepared with a turbine handpiece. The experimental material was ASPA, with silicate cement and zinc oxide‐eugenol cements being used as controls. The teeth were extracted approximately 4 days, 30 days or 90 days after insertion of the filling material. They were demineralized and prepared for histological examination. The test procedure and evaluation closely followed recommendations by the FDI (1980). The reaction at the short time interval for each material was similar, while at the intermediate and long periods silicate cement caused the most inflammation, zinc oxideeugenol cement the least, and ASPA an intermediate response. Summary.A method to remove broken instruments in root canals was developed employing a new ultrasonic device for root canal treatment. The results, using extracted teeth, showed that broken instruments locked tightly in round root canals were more difficult to remove compared with those in irregularly shaped root canals. This method was applied in 39 clinical cases, and in 26 of these the fragment was removed successfully while in six cases it was possible to bypass a file alongside the fragment. Therefore, in 32 out of the 39 clinical cases with broken instruments, it was possible to instrument to the apex.

Summary.A clinical study was conducted to determine, first the incidence of pain after chemo‐mechanical preparation of root canals, and second what clinical factors were associated with the incidence and degree of pain. Out of the 245 patients in the study 140 (57 per cent) had no pain, 52 (21 per cent) had slight pain, 30 (15 per cent) had moderate pain and 17 (7 per cent) had severe pain.
