Summary.Four commercially available, battery operated, unipolar electric pulp testers were tested and compared under identical laboratory conditions. The form and duration of the electrical impulses varied considerably between the instruments as did the maximum output voltage. None of the models tested passed constant current values when connected to a range of resistances.

Summary.A total of 845 sound teeth in 54 patients were stimulated by one of two new electric pulp testers to obtain pain perception threshold values. The age range of the patients was 18 to 27 years and only incisor, canine and premolar teeth were studied. Both testers were found to produce threshold responses over a wide range of control settings in groups of similar teeth. Summary.The sealing ability of four temporary filling materials was evaluatedin vitro, by studying leakage of radiosodium from the pulp chambers of teeth into an external medium. Zinc oxide‐eugenol based materials (IRM, ZOE) sealed better than calcium‐sulphate based materials (Cavidentin, Cavit‐G). Summary.A method of measuring the volume of the human dental pulp cavity is described.The crown of an extracted tooth is divided from its root. After cleaning the pulp cavity, it is filled with an elastomer, and the fractured tooth surfaces repositioned before the elastomer sets.The tooth is corroded in acid to release the elastomer which is then weighed, and its volume calculated.The method has been applied to representatives of each human tooth type, and mean values are given.

Summary.Two small studies designed to assess the usefulness of transillumination for testing tooth vitality are described. The results suggest that transillumination is a useful adjuvant to conventional methods of pulp vitality testing, particularly in assessing anterior teeth, or posterior teeth with minimal restorations. The value of combining the results of thermal tests with ethyl chloride and transillumination tests was also investigated, and found to be useful.

Summary.This is a report of a case where a patient suffered paraesthesia following root filling of her lower left second molar. The Swedish health authorities considered that as a formaldehyde containing root filling cement had been used, the dentist had not worked in accordance with science and proven experience.
