This communication describes a commmunity nursing service for the central districts of Manchester. Some functions of community nurses are suggested and the impact of such a service on the community psychiatric care is assessed. Evaluation of clinical performance requires that the nurse educator observes behaviour in a specific, goal‐directed manner and reports these observations clearly and unambiguously, although it is conceded that beyond basic technical skills there is little consensus as to what constitutes a good professional nurse. In 1976 100 nurses, mainly from the National Health Service, attended a study day organized by the Nursing Research Advisory Group for Scotland. The object was to create interest in published nursing research reports so as to generate critical thinking followed by activity on return to work. The theme for the day was ‘Justification and use of research in nursing’. It was postulated that research can be justified on the grounds of originality leading to a substantial addition to the nursing profession's body of knowledge and also on the grounds of replication which can provide credence to generalization from the original study. The subjects—prevention of pressure sores and nosocomial infection among others–were used to illustrate a possible financial justification. Each year several British health authorities are sued by patients who have developed a pressure sore in hospital. Should such a case be tried in open court it is highly debatable if a particular nurse's ignorance of well‐known research work would be defensible in court.Other justifications were thought to be economy of effort for nurses as well as patients, economy of material resources, research‐based nursing practice, improvement in the nursing curriculum and in manpower planning. The rapid growth and importance of present day nursing care, with its attendant complexities, are daily increasing the demand and need for utilizing new approaches in solving the problems associated with them. Regardless of the level of training attained by a nurse she needs a certain level of guiding principles for professional competence in order to function adequately in providing comprehensive nursing care. This paper examines the usefulness of the worklist in the provision of nursing care.

The report is concerned with some of the structural factors influencing modular schemes of nurse education. Based on interviews with students, teachers and ward staff, in addition to examination of ward staffing levels and structures, the report describes streaming of students, the possible effects of modular education on staffing and some changes introduced or proposed by four hospitals running such schemes.For the most part streaming was seen as being feasible but without any real advantages. Small drawbacks associated with streaming were, however, evident. The research suggested that many of the staffing difficulties associated with modular education were not created by the scheme of training but perhaps highlighted by it. Improvements which would both increase the effectiveness of the schemes and reduce some of these difficulties included movement towards more frequent intakes, a reduction in the length of classroom based element of the introductory course and abandonment of streaming and changes in the length/location of certain modules.

An important consideration in providing opportunities for graduates of one type of nursing programme to move to another type is how provisions to assess and recognize previous educational experience can be made. If the different educational institutions reflect different educational goals then the concept of ‘blanket credit’ is suspect. On the other hand, although tests of ability and/or achievement have long been used as the basis for decisions as to student placement in educational curricula, lack of valid and reliable test instruments has been identified as an important factor preventing schools from providing advanced standing. In schools which do have some type of credit by examination procedure, teacher‐made tests are highest in frequency of use.The purpose of the project described in this article is to develop reliable and valid methods of determining the extent to which applicants with diploma nursing education have mastered the competencies which would enable them to receive credit for one or more years in the nursing subjects of a four year baccalaureate programme. The credit examinations to be developed will be based on certain assumptions regarding differences in baccalaureate and diploma nursing education and vill, in essence, be criterion referenced
