摘要:
This paper aims to reflect upon the educational task of the university, to consider whether knowledge can be promoted and values ignored, and thus to explore the implications for nursing education The university is the cradle which nurtures intellectuals, professionals and scientists as whole human beings Paced by the spirit and the ideals ofpaideia, it cannot be limited merely to developing the student's mind It should also inspire the student with a belief in the higher values of life, as a compass in his profession (Paideiais an ancient Greek conception of the ideal human education It includes modern notions such as civilization, culture, tradition, literature, philosophy and education It means formation of the human being of any age, as an independent, free and virtuous whole person) Values, when transmitted by all teachers of all subjects within the educational structures of the university, can increase the student's respect for truth, for the worth and the rights of other persons, his appreciation of his own worth, assets and limitations, his love of wisdom and desire to serve humanity, his outlook about man's position in the world and his inquiring mind in order to discover higher perspectives of life Only in this way does university become a worthy centre ofpaideiafor educating nurses committed and aspiring to provide holistic, personalized, quality nursing care to people, as well as to determine and shape the future of nursing education in the midst of our technological, computerized, and some would say dehumanized era, propelling itself into the twenty‐first centu

摘要:
Nurses’ struggle to attain educational parity with other professional groups is closely aligned with the struggle of women for social equality within Canadian institutions The attempts of nursing educators to shift their perspective from social reform to educational reform and to develop nursing scholarship has been restricted by the cultural views of women Consequently, nurses’ gains in attaining higher education have been realized by reforms in social and health care policies thought suitable for women With advancement in university nursing education closely tied to social reform, nurses were not expected, nor did they expect, to pursue scholarly enquiry or develop research endeavours This paper suggests that the feminist movement offers nurses a social and psychological basis from which to complete the educational reform of nur

摘要:
A randomized controlled trial was undertaken to test the effects of an education programme, which included an information booklet and demonstration, on the management of unne drainage systems by patients and carers A total of 45 patients, new and established users, were included Data were collected at pretest, test and follow‐up visits The education programme was found to improve significantly the performance of handwashing after bag emptying and before and after bag changing, although this effect did not persist over time The findings are discussed with a number of conclusions drawn and recommendations for nursing practi

摘要:
The words ‘nurse’ and ‘nursing’ originate in the word ‘nurture’ which dates back to the 14th century ‘Nurturance’ appeared for the first time in the 1976Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionaryand in a United States dictionary in 1983 Etymologically and semantically bound to nursing, little is known about the term nurturance An exploratory design using phenomenological analysis was applied to understand the female registered nurses’ experience of nurturing patients throughout the life‐span and to uncover behaviours commonly bebeved nurturant Interviews with 14 RNs practising in diverse settings revealed 39 nurturant behaviours that were intuited into four themes describing the subjects’ perceived structure of nurturance as (1) enabling maximum potential, (2) providing physical and emotional protection, (3) engaging in a supportive interaction, and (4) conveying shared humanity Data were formulated into an exhaustive description of the phenomenon nurturance Additionally, the resultssupport Greenberg‐Edelstem's theoretical model of the positive reciprocity of nurturance b

摘要:
Considerable stress is involved in nursing education However, the sources and extent have not been fully investigated, nor have ways of coping The main purpose of the study was to explore the sources and levels of perceived stress, coping strategies and effectiveness among female baccalaureate nursing faculty The second purpose was to examine the relationship between stress, coping and academic responsibilities of the faculty member such as teaching, research and community service A sample of 70 subjects from eight Ontario universities completed the demographic questionnaire, the researcher‐developed ‘Stress‐Coping Anxiety Inventory’, and the ‘State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory’ Form Y (STAI) (Spielbergeret al1983) Analysis of data using frequencies, cross tabulations, ANOVA and Pearson product‐moment correlation were computed Perceived Stressors chosen most frequently as high in stress (≥ 4) (range = 1–5), in rank order, were ‘heavy workload (combined clinical and classroom teaching)’, ‘retaining failing students’, ‘failing clinically unsatisfactory students’, ‘meeting research requirements’ and ‘providing individual clinical supervision’ Active coping strategies were selected more frequently as being effective (≥ 4) than passive coping strategies Age of the respondent, number of years of full‐time teaching and tenure status were most often significant factors (<0 05) relating to the level of stress Implications for nursing education ad

摘要:
The development of community care policy and the inadequacies of professional responses to the needs of informal carers were described in an earlier paper A qualitative analysis of carers’ replies to a questionnaire survey demonstrated that the most potent Stressors, contrary to what has previously been assumed, were linked more to subjective perceptions of events or circumstances than to the objective features of the events and circumstances themselves This paper presents a quantitative analysis of data from the same survey which confirm the impressions gained from the analysis of the qualitative data These findings prompt a reconceptualization of carer burden within a transactional model of stress, which is then considered as a basis for understanding how carers adapt to stress in their lives Practice implications are assess

摘要:
The analysis of data from a grounded theory study of family interaction when a child has otitis media with effusion (OME) shows that these families are engaged in the process of learning to manage Their relationship with the health care system, coupled with the effects of the disease on the child and the family lifestyle, has a powerful influence on how this process proceeds In this paper, the authors discuss the impact of the family's relationship with the Canadian health care system on the development of management skills Relationships with the health care system fluctuate forward and backward through entrusting, becoming disillusioned, learning the rules and negotiating, as families leam to manage the effects of the disease process on the child and the family The family perspective of the quality and availability of health care at a time when health care systems throughout the world are under close scrutiny, adds to our understanding of consumer expectations Some recommendations for improving current relationships between families and the health care system are made

摘要:
Although ‘attitude change’ is included as one of the aims of the 1982 training syllabus for psychiatric nurses, curriculum designers are given little guidance as to what constitute desirable attitudes in the psychiatric nurse, and how those attitudes are to be assessed and evaluated This study has three aims to attempt to outline what might count as desirable attitudes, to propose a theoretical framework for the measurement of those attitudes, and to devise a test instrument and pilot it on three groups with differing amounts of counselling skills and experience The outcome of the pilot study produced surprising results, leading to the tentative hypothesis that counselling training and/or experience may have a detrimental effect on so‐called ‘therapeutic attitudes’ in
