摘要:
Henderson (1980) claims that, the unique function of the nurse renders her ‘rehabilitator par excellence’. This paper seeks to examine the perceived role of the nurse in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, to assess the extent to which the literature reflects Henderson's claim as a reality, or as a chimerical id

摘要:
This study examined a geriatric rehabilitation pilot project on an acute‐care medical unit. Over a 6‐week period, using a 35‐item geriatric rating scale and a mental assessment tool, changes in behaviours of 23 patients admitted to the geriatric rehabilitation module were compared to changes in behaviours of 10 elderly patients on a regular medical unit. The patients' demographic characteristics, their nursing and medical diagnoses, and discharge patterns were reviewed. Significant changes in behaviours of patients on the rehabilitation model included: increased ability to care for themselves, to maintain balance, and to communicate with others; decreased restlessness at night; decreased confusion; decreased incidence of incontinence; and improved social skills. The paper describes the geriatric rehabilitation programme and discusses implications for nursing of elderly patients in acute‐care ho

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability, validity, and utility of the ‘Inventory of Piaget's Developmental Tasks’ (IPDT) with elderly persons. The IPDT is a paper‐pencil assessment of levels of cognitive functioning. Seventy elderly adults responded to a battery of instruments. Reliability and validity estimates for the IPDT were acceptable. Data indicated that the IPDT has promise as a clinical assessment of cognitive functioning. Implications for patient teaching by nurses is discussed and suggestions for clinical use are

摘要:
Little information exists in the literature to assist the nurse in understanding people of ethnic minority group status who become hospitalized in an acute‐care setting. Research on these populations has primarily centred on out‐patient service utilization and on folk health practices, yet the process of becoming hospitalized seems far more disruptive and traumatic to the individual and the family than receiving health care at a clinic. Observations made on a large medical‐surgical in‐patient unit in the south‐western United States indicated the specific concerns Mexican American patients experienced during their hospitalization. Seventy patients of Mexican descent were followed through their hospital stay. Seven socio‐cultural constructs influenced the hospital experience: social network, language proficiency, modesty, socio‐economic status, role expectations, folk beliefs and practices, and the medical diagnosis. Economic and educational status were seen as the most significant factors preventing patients from this ethnic minority group from constructing their hospital experience in accordance with staff

摘要:
The dependency of elderly patients is the outcome of interaction effects between the patient and his or her environment, and over a protracted stay in hospital, environmental factors can be as influential in determining a patient's dependency as the patient's medical or physical condition. Rigid institutional regimes and inadvertent reinforcement of dependent behaviours by nursing staff appear to play an important part in the development of institutionally induced dependency. Studies of patient dependency which assume that dependency arises largely from the physical or mental condition of the patient lack validity because the major source of variation in nursing activity is seen as an almost mechanistic response to patients' dependency. It is argued that, rather than patient dependency ‘causing’ nursing actions, nursing actions can cause patients to become more or less depend

摘要:
Evaluation of nursing educational programmes has received increased attention since the early 1970s. Many evaluation models have been proposed; they are intended for evaluation of the total educational programme, but provide little evidence on the relevancy of the support courses to nursing practice. This paper describes one nursing school's experience in evaluation of a support course. The nature and sources of problems and difficulties encountered during the evaluation process are also discussed. The authors propose a framework for evaluation of support courses in a nursing curriculum. This framework is an application of the Glaser, Stufflebeam and Stake models of programme evaluation. It is designed to assist nurse educators to strive for sound curriculum decisions.

摘要:
The objective of the study was to investigate short‐term absence (STA) taken by a group of student nurses during the 3‐year training period. The amount of, reasons given for, and attitudes towards such absence were considered. The information was attained by means of a questionnaire, interviews with selected students and analysis of data from hospital records. A group of 30 student nurses, approaching the end of their training, co‐operated in the study. The methods used in the study are described and the findings which emerged are described and disc

摘要:
This paper looks at five historical trends in the field of macro‐policy making for nursing. From these it postulates that nursing is, now, a pluralist structure with three main interest groups. Each interest group has its own view of reality and therefore its own goals and strategies, some of which are in conflict with those of the other groups. Furthermore, the goals of the nursing groups are also in conflict with those of the government health department. The paper proposes a typology for nursing which takes account of these conflicts, helps to identify the areas of conflict and makes a proposal for the future structure which would help to achieve a more harmonious framework in the NH
