摘要:
The use of marble panels as building cladding in Riyadh has increased in the last two decades. However, many problems have arised due to the severe climatic conditions, atmospheric pollution and inferior design detailing practices. These issues are discussed, focusing on the material properties and availability, local environment and the design detailing techniques. Examples from existing buildings are presented to illustrate the magnitude of these prevailing problems.

摘要:
Evaluation of the curing characteristics of various generic types of high performance sealants including one and two-part polysulphide, one and two-part polyurethane, and silicone commonly used on building facades was carried out. Specimens were cured under controlled conditions and tested over a period of 5 months. The huge variations in the rate of curing among and within the different generic types of sealants tested indicate the significance of the proper selection of sealants by the designers especially in cases where joints are subjected to high movement stresses.

摘要:
An analytical comparative method is proposed f or the evaluation of relative performance of design alternatives by multiple criteria which are expressed in terms of quantitative design variables. Any one of the latter may be included in one or more of the criterion functions. For each criterion the appropriate performance function is applied to the absolute values, which are then converted to weighted relative values. Subsequently multiple statistical parameters are employed, also accounting for the deviation of individual criterion performances. Finally, those alternatives with above-average values for all statistical criteria can be rank-ordered. The effect can be investigated of design variables on the overall performance of each alternative. The method also allows the performances to be ascertained of alternatives at each phase or over the complete life cycle and of phases in the life cycle for the given set of alternatives.

摘要:
Direct entry of solar radiation through glass in windows plays an important role in increasing the cooling load of air-conditioned building. A number of external and internal shading devices are available (Sharma, 1972) to reduce the heat gain inside the building. Proper design of shading is very important. A simple method has been developed to design the external shading of windows. This method has been discussed in this paper in detail. With the help of curves, designers and architects can find out the dimensions of external shading devices in any orientation.

摘要:
Productivity and quality are two inter-related issues of utmost importance in the construction industry. The buildability concept and ISO 9000 quality management systems are used to help raise productivity and quality standards in construction. However, both buildability principles and ISO 9000 quality system elements are frequently considered separately in many consulting and construction firms. Many of these firms have also developed and implemented ISO 9000 quality management systems in their organisations. To achieve synergy, buildability principles can be integrated within ISO 9000 quality management systems. Apart from highlighting key buildability principles and ISO 9000 quality system elements, this paper relooks at how the former may be integrated into the latter to achieve synergy in construction productivity and quality standards.
