At least four mechanisms can be identified to explain the interaction between sprinkler and fire in an enclosure: the direct cooling of the burning objects; the cooling of the hot layer; the pre-wetting of the walls, floors and neighbouring objects; and finally the displacement of oxygen from the fuel. This paper reports the interaction of the sprinkler water spray with the hot layer. A field modelling technique is used and the problem is divided into gas and liquid phases. For the gas phase, the set of conservation equations for mass, momentum and enthalpy is solved numerically using the PISO algorithms. For the liquid phase, the sprinkler water spray is described by a number of droplets with initial velocity and diameter calculated by empirical expressions for the nozzle at different operating water pressures and flow rates. The predicted results include the gas flow, temperature and smoke concentration fields; the shape of the water spray; and some relevant macroscopic parameters such as amount of convective cooling, drag to buoyancy ratio etc. The effect of the mean droplet size on those parameters is illustrated.

This paper presents a computerized system that is being developed for the integration of performance evaluation throughout the whole design process of buildings. The main motto is enabling routine architectural design work, but by means of a CAAD medium, while providing automatic feedback on the expected performances of the designed solutions. A basic assumption is that decisions and choices should be made by the designer, whereas analysis during early design stages, and provision of alternatives for construction elements and materials during detailed design stages, are the realm for computerization and automation. The paper outlines the whole system that is being developed, and dwells in more detail on the part that pertains to detailed design (i.e. selection of materials and cross-sections for all the building elements), which has already been completed.

In an attempt to improve the quality of lighting in the office building, this investigation studied the possible use of directional fluorescent lighting as a means of introducing contrasts in a traditionally diffued lighting amsphere. In particular it was hoped that directional lighting could model the human face more pleasantly. The effectiveness of directional lighting was evaluated using four different colour temperatures.

Architecture schools in India have been conducting aptitude tests for selecting students for admission to B. Architecture program. The reason for the conduct of such tests is a strong notion that students who perform well in such tests would be better suited to the creative needs of the program, and in turn, would be better professionals. In the case study, scores in aptitude test were correlated with various course performance variables for three successive classes of students. The results seem to suggest that aptitude tests may not be reliable indicators of performance in course program, even in the most vital course of them all—Architectural Design. Various explanations have been offered for the lack of correlation as tentative hypotheses for wider investigation.
